On second thought, we need an order, or there won't be skips. Need the clock on #4 after #3 bids or passes, for example.

So following DO's logic, if we chose 8 hours for automatic skips, the shortest time between two skips that then turned to a PASS would be 16 hours - and that is if everyone else picked immediately. So in most cases I would imagine it would be 16-24 hours.

Based on that I would suggest either 3 hours or 8 hours as the choices - one is a keep it moving, win some/lose some approach. The other provides what should be plenty of time for all to get a shot at everyone. The balance is bogging down if seven of 12 owners are unavailable and the double skip rule keeps a single auction going for a week plus as a result.

And after all that I saw the poll and voted right in the middle - 6 hours and 2 skips=a pass. that's 12 hours minimum! And we are talking about CONSECUTIVE skips here - if someone skips once, then bids, their "skip clock" is reset to zero....

yes, I suppose you really do need an order. I'm thinking about this whole skip and pass thing, and since passing puts you right out of the bidding, then wouldn't you be better off to just skip?

I'm just thinking that say Ruth is being bid on and I really have no interest in him, but I see that only 2 guys are bidding on him and the bidding is at only 5 mill. Then it would behoove me ( I love that word .... behoove, not me) to maybe get into the bidding. If I passed then I can't get back in, but if I was skipped then I can still bid.

Yes, DHowser, you have happened upon the beauty of the SKIP strategy - I saw that too and agree that a skip is a nice path to take strategically.

Basically that means you have three choices when you are up: BID, SKIP or PASS. Understanding that two consecutive skips (voluntary or involuntary) equals a pass.

If someone enterprising sets this up as a web utility it would get used A LOT - and the best part is it stretches that credit out nice and LOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG.

The result is that if you think you might want to bid later, you are essentially better off to "be unavailable" and let it sit for three hours than to pass.

The difficulty will be that if my turn comes up on DiMaggio, can I bid X mill on him if I am currently in the lead on Mays at X million. Can I afford not to if I lose the Mays bid. Way better to be "unavailable" and still have options. Ultimately the guy unwilling to make people wait will be at a disadvantage to the guy who is willing to make them wait.

Also, the point of the starting bid for each player was brought up by Palonian. What if, whoever it is that chooses the next player up for bids, also chooses the starting bid on this player. For example, say I just won Buck Martinez for my bid of 34 mill. I could then choose Ernie Whitt as the next player and his starting bid is 15 mill.

What if a SKIP was voluntary as well, but only allowed to SKIP once, because if you SKIP twice, you PASS?

Does that make sense?
