NEW SUMMER LEAGUE - AUCTION - CHAT ONLY

Postby bkeat23 » Fri Jan 09, 2009 12:05 pm

My take on the 24 hours, which could be wrong, is that active bidding could be going beyond 24 hours as 2 or 3 owners make increasing bids, and a player not getting bids for 24 hours is the property of the high bidder. If that is the case, then there will be staggered close times on different players, which would create different start time on subsequent players.

An extreme example....owner 1 begins an auction on Dave Chalk at $.75K, and no one else bids, so 24 hours later it's over,

Owner 2 opens with Frisch at $4M, and there are 4 owners making ever increasing bids. We stop that active auction 24 hours after the start, or 24 hours after the last bid?

Yes, that's the way I was thinking, too, which was why I thought ther might be a set time for the start of a new player auction, but I'm indifferent on that.

24 hours after the LAST bid.

I think we pretty much stomped on the e-bay concept of a deadline.

I think proxies are a big challenge. We are all honest, I am sure, but it's not a matter of honesty. It's a matter of how to prioritize and process proxies.

The best idea I have heard is to just get started on five players - no deadline, but say if there are no additional bids for 24 hours after the last bid, the player goes to that owner.

Then we see how it goes. If we are on player 17 in mid March there's obviously a problem. Plus people won't wait 24 hours to place their bid. If Ruthis at 15.4MM and you want him, you'll up the bid right away. no real need for e-bay style sniping there.

We can debate this for weeks and probably won't build consensus on all aspects. Simpler = better. Let's just get the stadiums picked and throw five guys up for auction with this idea and see what happens! If 24 hours expires (per the time stamp on the most recent bid) that player automatically goes to that owner, we enter it on Palanion's roster site and we put the next player on the block.

We've worked for 3 full days to get 7 stadiums picked - ugh. We are all patient, but we won't really start to generate some energy until some players are "on the block".

Let's "just do it" Whatdya Say? 8-)

I will update the spreadsheet on the Web page once a day, probably early afternoon (though weekends might be a crap shoot for me to update).
I don't think enough players' bids will end more frequent to warrant me posting an updated spreadsheet any more often than that.

Once a day will do fine Palanion - the time stamp on the last bid is our "official record" on that bid - we just say NO BIDS after the 24 hour period. The 24 hours keeps everybody in the game for each player.

Just a note - in theory, if every group of five sold in 24 hours (which is technically impossible), we are looking at a 60 day auction. My guess is we at least double that (48 hours per group of five). That's 120 days and gets us almost to summer. This "feels about right" for the stated purpose of the league. If you take 23 hours to evaluate strategy and decide to bid at the last minute, that's cool. We will all be patient.

Let's start and see how it goes. After the big guns are gone the auction will speed up, just like it does in a fantasy footbal auction.

So... I THINK this encapsulates where we're at in terms of rules:

Five players get put on the auction block at once to start this thing.
Minimum bid is ___________.
Bid increments of $100,000.
Random bidding.
If a manager posts a PASS on a player being auctioned, then that manager cannot re-enter the bidding.
Bidding on a player ends when 24 hours passes with no bid.
Last (high) bid gets player.
Manager of winning bid announces next player to be auctioned; does not have to bid.

Am I forgetting something? Misunderstanding something?

I think you pegged it Palanion - at least that what you and me agree to.

One note on your summary - I think the whole PASS thing really doesn't serve much of a purpose unless we are snaking and it sounds like we are not - it's a simple 24 hour no additional bids that determines a winner. If you don't want a player, no need to PASS, just don't bid.

As for minimums, I don't think we will have big issues. Just start at $500K. If Ruth starts at $500K, he will be up to $10MM plus in an hour. The interesting part will be the pitchers and how high they go in early bidding - would you pay $8M for Pete if you know you might get Marichal for $1M in a late round? That will be fun to strategize!

You can wait as long as you like (up to 24 hours) to bid, but if you know you are willing to go higher, just bid right away. The 24 hours basically covers guys that are away from their computers for large portions of the day.

LET"S DO IT!
