NEW SUMMER LEAGUE - AUCTION - CHAT ONLY

Postby GFDWARF07 » Sat Jan 10, 2009 9:32 am

The minimum will make a difference once we get into the later rounds, certainly. I started these at $500K just to get going and I heard more voices in favor of $500K than not - not scientific, but what I heard none-the-less. But we probably need to decide before these first five end.

I will set up a separate auction thread and create individual entries with current bids for each player currently "up".

OK the bidding thread is set up. When you enter a bid, please copy the player's full name into the subject line. Let's keep bidding while we decide on the minimum!

Not that it will probably matter, but since we started bidding prior to the new thread set up, we should record the current bids as:

Speaker at 6:07 a.m.
Foxx at 6:24 a.m.
Johnson at 6:24 a.m.
Frisch at 8:20 a.m.
Koufax at 8:20 a.m.

I believe I am correct with the above, but someone, other than the younger Howser, may want to double check.

If higher bids are now entered into the new thread, this will become a mute point.

I don't want to dwell But........

We definitely need to come to a resolution on a minimum bid before any auction is won.
Example a 7M$ player can either go for 500K or 1.75M. That is an astronomical difference OR 1.25M on a calculator.
This will affect how much I bid on any given player either way I will take Foxx for the 7.9M that I bid.

Wow, two pages of this thread since I left work yesterday!

As for keeping an organized tally. I have created a spreadsheet that I will update, on average, once a day and post on a Web page for all to download.

The site is http://www.angelfire.com/palanion/SummerAuction.html

Bookmark it.

There is a sheet for each manager.

As for the minimum bid. I will publicly change my vote from 40% to $500k.

If we are going to refer to the vote, I think we should decide between 2 broad options:

A. $500K (which should be the lowest possible) - otherwise we will have a ton of good pitchers going for $200K at the end. With Palanion on board now - let's just do this! $500K is a reasonable minimum or we will have labor strife and a possible strike on our hands :)

B. A percentage (25 or 40%) of the minimum - if we look at these as two additional options they split the vote. Deomocracy has its place, but if we decide on a percentage Bob should just name the percentage and let's move on. We will all rally around the decision.

I cannot honestly remember how I voted before. But, I think I heard at least five people indicating that they wanted the chance for bargains at the end of the draft and supporting the $500K. I will go either way - that's just what I recall from the earlier discussion. If people don't vote, we can't chase them down - take the votes we have and declare a winner. Once we have a rule we can move on.

Thanks and let's have some fun now sniping each others' favorite players!

My concern with 500,000 is that we will have people budgeting for spending their money on their core players(maybe anywhere from 15-20 players) and then the minimum for the rest. Or will overspend and get to the minimum on the rest.

We could get to a point where 4 guys are left with spots open and 500,000 each to spend on whatever number of guys and whoever won the last bid will get to pick all his guys first since his 500,000 will automatically win all the bids. Probably won't happen but not sure since we have never done this. At 500,000 each, the more expensive the player for the most part the better the bargain and we will all be seeking like or similar bargains.

I do however like the bargain potential. What if we went with a % but made it low.......maybe 10%(or lower). a & million dollar pitcher going for 700,000 is still a bargain and leaves us in a position where a wider variety of dollars will be saved with a wider variety of players sought

Looks like we have started and this was decided. If so, never mind and lets see what happens. Any way you slice it this should be fun and probably a bit painful at times. I think it will be one we want to do again. Great idea.

I agree with your points, MBW, and would also support 10%. But as long as we have a level playing field, it works out evenly. At least the 10% results in some pitchers probably going for close to double a min of 500K.

It will be interesting to see how high the bidding goes on certain players, knowing you will have cheap alternatives that aren't all that bad if you wait.... RIGHT? Or maybe I am just trying to throw everyone off my trail...

Any way we slice it - should be a blast! And yes - the second time through (if we play agian - which may be the winter of 2010) will also be interesting and we will have the experience to boot.
