ATG IV 16 event Franchise League

I have to be honest, the fact that it wasn't looked into that everyone would have a 1 for every position is defeating the purpose of the rule. I can live with that error. But to then stick me with a .50 2B is kind of bull. Not only am I losing out on having a 1 defense , but I'm also getting porked by having to start a .50 player. I know this is the way it is, but I might as well take my $25, wipe my *** with it, and flush it down the toilet.

I'd also like to through out something that should be voted on.

The player that is making the rules for the season should be allowed to make one rule, two at the most.

This season there's the primary rule, and then a bunch of stipulations.

For instance. It's hard enough to find a decent player with a 1, but then once you do, you get screwed because he didn't have 500 AB or 200 IP. That's another rule within it self.

Sorry for rambling. Just needed to get that off my chest.

I agree with if we continue the lowest e of the 2's should be used I will have all 1's but probably most of my protected P will end up released to get under the cap This is somewhat of a mess same as every other theme league I play in I love it cause it is different and actually usually turns out more realistic but you have to manage in a theme

I agree with PJ about the rules issue. It's one thing to make a couple "theme" rules that should be of benefit to you, but to much is too much.

Off the top of my head, some thoughts.

1. Theme rules - examples of types we've had so far that could make up part one would be the OPS rule, "1" defense rule, minimum needed from certain era's, "screw" your neighbor... anything that defines the roster make-up/balance

2. Roster qualifying rule - examples of types are open to any player that wore the uniform, minimum AB/IP, minimum service years, carded only players... anything that defines eligibility based on franchise

3. Conditions Rule - examples are live draft, protecting players, stadium usage... things that are more in the "potpourri" variety

On the surface it seems that if we kept it to one of each category as well as keeping it [color=blue:50e6c29805]relatively [/color:50e6c29805]clear and simple that we could stay out of harms way. We need to be realistic in understanding that if you make a very narrowing "theme" rule, that in turn the Roster limitating rules need to be less infringing. Additionally, if you make the rules you have to make sure that it is doable.

Aero I'm really not trying to be a jack*ss or slamming you, just want to see things get straightened out. Hopefully, there are no hard feelings here, I know I can come across as an *sshole sometimes.

Just some quick thoughts.

[quote:f35679c3c5="rosenthm"] I, for one, will proably be starting a nickel catcher and my starting 3rd baseman will be Dave Brain...who in the world is Dave Brain? [/quote:f35679c3c5]

Dave Brain was a third baseman and shortstop who had pretty good power for a few years.

Starting out in 5 games in 1901 with the Chicago White Sox, he hit .350 and then came back in 1903 as a regular shortstop with the St. Louis Cardinals where he was fourth in the league in triples with 15. The next year was a big year as he was 7th in the league in doubles, sixth in triples, and second in the league in home runs.

In 1905 he slumped early on and was traded part-way through the season to the Pittsburgh Pirates where Honus Wagner was shortstop, so Brain moved to third base, apparently putting Tommy Leach into the outfield. Brain was only in Pittsburgh for 1/2 year, though, as he was traded after the season to the Boston Beaneaters with a couple other players for Vic Willis. Willis had had a few off-years, but he was to be very successful during the next four years in Pittsburgh, though.

Even though Brain didn't play up to his ability in 1905, he still became famous for hitting three triples in a game in May and then doing it again in August. He is the only National League player to hit three triples in a game twice in a season.

Brain was 7th in the league in home runs the next year with Boston. His .250 batting average may not seem like much, but it was the dead ball era and the team as a whole hit .226. He slugged .333 while the team slugged .281. However, in a game in June 1907, he made a record 5 errors at third base. In 1907, he had an even better year, hitting .279 for a team that hit .243. He slugged .420 on a team that slugged .309. His slugging percentage was 5th in the league, he led the league in home runs with 10, and his 24 doubles were 5th in the league. It was pretty good for a third baseman, since in those days players who played third usually didn't hit much.

Hugh Duffy

Postby jpgavin » Thu Jan 15, 2009 9:28 pm

Hugh Duffy is carded to the Cardinals (1901). According to Baseball Reference.com, Duffy played for the Milwakee Brewers (this franchise ultimately became the current Baltimore Orioles) that year and never played for the Cards. :? Anybody else find errors like this?

Pjatscfy,

You should be fine for Herr. Even though he doesn't have 500 AB's with the Twins, no one else can use him because of his defensive rating, so he should be all yours in the Autodraft. If worse comes to worst, you have exclusive rights to Quilici, so no need to pick him during the live draft or even rank him for the autodraft. If you somehow miss out on Herr, you still have an out.
