Does Anyone Play 1969?

Postby bleacher_creature » Fri Feb 24, 2006 7:50 pm

What's the deal? We have five teams in a standard league, but getting to 12, is that going to take a month or what?

It doesn't speak well for the future of 1969 Strat if we can't find 12 players in the entire world.

How long do these '69 leagues usually take to fill?

As a manager who has been on the site very often this week at all times of day and night I have seen less than 1 or 2 managers on the browsing list that I had thought the site was down. I'm not talking about the times when the site was actually down.

I have a League started early in the week and within a day had 8 managers. A little while went by and 1 joined. There may be a 10th but 3-4 days and no others joined.

If you want to join check out "The Aligned Franchises League" on the 1969 Message Board. All managers are vets and we will be picking set COMBO Franchises. $100M cap.

To answer your question the right Theme League seems to fill in days but auto leagues can take weeks. Vets seem attracted themes and playing against other vets.

As I stated and fully expected when they were preparing to add a new game, the shelf life of a single season game will be VERY short.

I would expect that this game will be completely dead by the end of March... once 2006 rolls out in full force. And if it isn't then, it will be this summer when ATG3 hits.

I said it then and will say it again, they should have come out with a back to the 70's game.... this is from someone who has played one team in BTT80's, and HATES the mystery card concept w/ a passion.

Novie's suggestion is great and it ties with my concept which is to produce sets of teams and/or players by decade.

ATG3 isn't played by team but by drafting individual players. So why be constrained by selecting 1 team. There are many ways this could go.

TSN is also coming out with a revised edition of the BTT80's game sometime after the 2006 game comes out. Hopefully before the ATGIII because I hate the ATG games. The more I play the mystery card game the more I love it! I also enjoy the 20xx games.

The mystery card game is more for the advanced players while the ATG games are so easy because every player is a HOFer. Oh, I missed getting Ty Cobb. I guess I'll have to make due with Ted Williams, Rickey Henderson or Babe Ruth. :P

OK, I'll stop now. All the SOM games are enjoyable (including ATG). I just wanted to jab the ATG guys a little.

1969 - too risky?

I was very excited when 1969 came out. (That was my first exposure to strat, back when the game was single sided... no complex rules, etc.) Unfortunately it was about the same time I was laid off. Couldn't see laying down $25 to play on-line SOM with those circumstances. Not that I couldn't afford it... just the principle. Huge time commitment, too.

That being said, it's sad to see this happen to the game. Newbies have no place to go unless they want their clocks cleaned by vets in intricate them leagues.

A friend contacted me and told me about the special deal this week (because of some trouble SOM had with the site???). I felt like maybe I could come in and buy some 1969 credits. After reading through these boards a bit, I'm afraid that I may never get to use them. I'm not interested in a combined franchise theme, but I don't want to wait until May to play in a 1969 pick-up league, either.

I understand you vets wanting to maximize your strat pleasure with theme leagues and competing against one another. I just wish it didn't have to be that way.

We had to do some pimping, but we got a standard league filled in about a week. It looks to be great fun.

For a measly $12.50, I'll buy at least one more '69 team, and just allow a couple of weeks for the league to fill up.

I'm not quite ready for the theme leagues either. The competition here is pretty stiff, and I need to work up to that.

Now that I've drafted my '69 team full of many players I watched as a little kid (1969 was the first series I watched - spent the night with Granpa so we could catch two games), it's going to be tough to get real excited to the plain old 2005 (2006 SOM) season.

The 1969 teams usually fill by the weekend. I've had my share of Sunday waivers in autodraft 1969 leagues.

To some of the other points made here, I would like to see a back to the 70's game too. I enjoy 80's, even though I find it frustrating at times and very luck-based. It would be fun to play another mystery card game with a different player pool.

On the other hand, I enjoy these single-season throwback games. 1969, granted, doesn't have the repeat playability of ATGII or 80's, but it's fun to play with these cards five or 10 times over a winter.

I hope TSN brings another one back this year-- maybe 1930 with all the hitting, or the year of the pitcher 1968, or 1951 or 1978 or any other distinctive and memorable season.

Hey all---We need 3 more managers to kick off our league.. Gonna be a little different. It is a group of managers that have played several leagues together and the interaction between managers will have you howling with laughter. If you do not want to get messages this would NOT be a league you would want to get in. On the other hand if you enjoy the banter back and forth between managers this will be the funnest league you have been in guaranteed. It is set up as a private league because we wanted to give everyone in our current league a chance to get in before we posted on the board.. Come and join this wild and wacky group of VERY good managers and try a league that is a little different............60 mil---advanced---DH....League name...Apollo 13....password....jimlovell
