Old situation thread

a drink at a srtrip club is not a business though. A business associate of mine was an executive chef for many years for a large hotel chain--and margins are almost even on food--the drinks put them in the black and pay the rent.

He bought a small restaurant 2 years ago (non-franchised) and has not seen black numbers regularly. But yes--re-using saturday orders for monday specials and getting folks to buy wine with dinner keeps him able to operate for now.

Internet porn? Somehow I think that fits into the definition of almost illegal or fly-by-night. Not an investment-worthy cause for me. Besides a few of the major labels, how many have been around for more than five years? Fly by night.

Hang in there Bernie. I have played through the same issues you are now, I had a site go to a new server and all hell broke loose. It is impossible to know what could go wrong, people who think otherwise probably have never had to do this kind of thing. I say do the best you can, relax if you can, most people are patient. i know some people are more disadvantaged than others, I am a perpetual match-up guy too who never depends upon rotation and everything right now is hay-wire. So I understand the frustration. the problem is guys like Bernie do read the posts and too many negative posts just inflame the problem, you get to worrying about everything all at once. Let's get through this! Thanks.

[quote:13cc72844e="hechojazz"]if you consider that while Strat-O-Matic baseball may not be available elsewhere on the net, TSN should be concerned that episodes like this may lead to our deciding to send our money elsewhere for a different entertainment.[/quote:13cc72844e]

You said it all when you say SOM baseball is not available elsewhere on the net. My entertainment dollars are staying right here. I LOVE THIS GAME! Frankly we all do or we wouldn't be freaking out that it is not available to us right now.

Hey, lots of businesses operate on a 50% or higher margin...furniture stores....some clothing stores....jewelry stores....I mean retail mark up is normally 100% over wholsale...why do you think every company in the US has started exporting their MFG to China! It is so they can rake in higher margins.

The problem mood is you obviously won't walk with your dollar--and that pisses you off that you don't have control of it.

I guess if you like internet porn you can shop around if they piss you off.

Where do you think the "coffers" get the money from? It's us SOMers and sorry but when I ran my first business in the 80s I didn't make a habit of giving away money so my customers could hope to surf porn.

But I had to take care of them because they had many choices, and we were successful because we gave them their money's worth. But honetsly if they didn't have a choice I'd give that extra dollar to the shareholders who funded me and then a hearty amount to a tax-reducing charity/nonprofit so that it made good sense and also helped the community.

This is the real world guys. Don't blame SOMO because you don't have the will to walk with your wallet. Blame Hal Richman maybe for selling exclusive rights and being tight about expansion, and maybe get on TSN management ineptitude, but thinking the company is raking in twice it's investment is absolute nonsense.

and what planet do you live on where retail markup over wholesale cost equates to margin?

I understand the language difference now. It's beyond explanation obviously.

Everybody take a deep breath and repeat after me: "It's only a game." Bernie, if you have to, why not just suspend games until things are fixed, give yourself a well-deserved time out, and come back refreshed. Yeah, some of us will moan and groan, but the rest of us will take the opportunity to realize there is, indeed, life after FantaSim... or ATGII or whatever.

have you ever posted something that was..well not thought out very well. You are right profit margins and retail markup are not the same thing. I definetly erroneously stated my case....retail is an awful example most retail stores are in the red until "black friday" (the day after thanksgiving)

I still think that there are many examples of businesses that work off a 50% margin but most are web based and I personally don't like using pornography as an example because I think it should be illegal but...who cares what I think.
