SITUATION UPDATE: CAUGHT UP

Postby ROGGIE » Sun Feb 26, 2006 12:56 am

My mistake-it was only about 6% of the entire season but I've got Henry Blanco as my computer suggested leadoff hitter!!! I'm entitled to be confused and upset!!

THE CATCHING UP PART

Postby nevdully's » Sun Feb 26, 2006 1:34 am

I really feel for Bernie and crew and appreciate their effort. There are several things to consider and while some are unfortunate, (sh*t happens) others are still unacceptable.

While many accepted the decision to run 9 games without any changes in settings, many more seemed very against it, but were ignored.

Certainly NO ONE seeemed to prefer this solution. but ALL other suggestions were ignored with little or no explanation why.

Did Benie feel for us? Yes, no doubt, but basically said "[b:93bf3f656f]I know this sucks but this is how we're choosing to handle it" (they did have options)[/b:93bf3f656f]
Do we feel for Bernie? Yes, but while mistakes can, and will happen, the solution to these mistakes was lousy and with no thought towards the [b:93bf3f656f]existing customers[/b:93bf3f656f].. UNBIELEVABLY after posting "consider the game is broken try and have a good weekend" we were than told at 9:00PM line-ups for tonight's games need to be completed by the usual 10;00PM tinme! WTF!!!!!!

After being glued to my computer waiting and hoping for things to get right for the last couple of days, I'm finally told take the weekend off. While I resign myself to the fact that It'll take them some time to get things fixed, there's a certain amount of relief knowing I can go live me life (lol) BUT then given an hour to set my 38 teams, what!

The best solutuion for us, was, and perhaps for Bernie's mental health too, was to put the games on hold and pickup next Thursday with business as usual. However I don't believe this was ever even consider as an option because..

I don't think they'd EVER consider turning away new business even if it means screwing the customers that already spent their hard earned dollars and vested much time into existing seasons. That was (imo) strickly a business decision, and a very bad one.

Finally to *some* of the people who say relax it's just a game. LMAO!! These are some of the same people who are first to biatch when I live draft takes a little too long between picks.

It's not just a game it's a service WE PAY FOR and a Business they run.....

By the Way---THIS IS CURRENTLY OCCURRING WITH ME!!!!!!!!!!!! Henry "Speedy" Blanco is my leadoff hitter and Left fielder!!!!!!!!!!![/quote:8cdf92f23f]

I had Mickey Cochrane get hurt in the 2nd game Thursday night for 8 games which means that not only do I get Elston Howard but he will bat 2nd...C'est la guerre ..It's only a game and we only pay $25 for 2 months of tinkering. This was a one time phenomena...grow up people.

Thanks to the TSN Guys for working above and beyond the call.

Upgrade the prizes!

Postby Chicago Colts » Sun Feb 26, 2006 3:03 am

Well, I do think Bernie did his best under the circumstances. However, this latest debacle just put more emphasis on my main issue with the game. Offering free credits for league champions is unacceptable. Prizes must be an option, with ALL playoff teams figuring in on the prizes. One could choose free credits if they wish, or they could choose from a list of prizes, such as apparel, sports memorabilia, or gift certificates. Most all other similar simulation sites offer some sort of prizes. Strat loyalists will probably still choose the free credits, while the more casual player at least has an option for saving points for prizes. Having something tangible to show for all the money spent on simulation games should be considered. I spend most of my time in expert fantasy leagues, but Strat is great fun during the offseason, and it beats the days of playing Strat-o-Matic and Statis Pro Baseball and compiling hundreds of games by hand. I spent more time calculating the stats than actually playing the game.

All,

First.. I'd like to apologize that this maintenance took way longer than expected.. There was no excuse for it, even considering the circumstances..

Second.. I'd like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

Third.. I'd like to say that TSN will try to it make up to you guys, but I'd leave it up to Bernie to get more details to you.

Fourth.. I'd like to thank Bernie for his hard work, and [b:dc83b301a1]his[/b:dc83b301a1] patience.. He was working days and nights with us to try to find workarounds and alternative solutions.. He's going to continue working through the night trying to get teams up to speed and clean up.

Fifth, I'd like to thank everyone of the crew that participated and helped with the maintenance, and didn't give up after being up for a number hours that I am sure many folks on these boards never experienced.

Sixth.. I'd like to thank everyone for their support and concern about my hand/finger.. After a couple of stitches and a few hours in the hospital I was able to help the maintenance to come to a completion. I am sure a visit to an orthopedic will get me to full strength asap.

Lastly, I'd like to shed a bit more light on the actual maintenance.. This was no simple server upgrade, but a full scale datacenter move involving dozens of peieces of equipment. We were planning it for a number of months, unfortunately it wasn't 100% executed according to plan, unfortunately we also had little in performing the move at a different time, since the datacenter is shutting down this weekend. The last datacenter move I participated in involved more then two dozen people, and a complete mirror of the environment. This move involved far less resources (but was at a similar scale), although we were able to mirror (and upgrade) a lot of the environment (but not all of it) at the new datacenter prior to the move. Since a lot of things were physically moved (some servers are a few hundred pounds) there were plenty of places for the move to go wrong.. You must also understand that there is also little room in 'rollback plan' when your servers are out of racks and in a truck..

Anyway, I won't try to come up with any more details that might seem as excuses.. I feel we dedicated all the limited resources we could.

I'd also like to add that those saying that banks never go down, should visit their bank sites as often as I do (citibank's universal card site was down just a few hours ago when I tried to pay my bill).. Those stating that ebay never goes down, know better.. I believe a couple of those stories can be found in news archives..

Once again.. I'd like to thank everyone for support and understanding. We try our best to keep you happy, we really do..

-Andrey

P.S.
Those feeling that strat games are the last to get a look are not correct. There were plenty of similar problems with servers other than the ones running strat backend, they were just less visible to customers.

[b:6e97916841]EDIT, SUNDAY 5AM ET[/b:6e97916841]

It looks like we were successful in our plan to catch up all leagues and we'll be resuming our normal game schedule effective immediately. At least we're already able to see some benefit from the datacenter move/upgrade - we played 2 nights' worth of games in the time it used to take to play 1.

Please be advised that this was no simple maintenance; it was a large-scale datacenter move [i:6e97916841]and[/i:6e97916841] equipment upgrade. I can explain in more detail later, but the most relevant points are that not only will nightly processing be expedited in the immediate term, but the architecture of our new servers will make it easier for us to develop further optimizations and core game enhancements in the long run, and hopefully our site performance will be more reliable on a day-to-day basis.

Thanks again for your continued patience over the last 2 days. And also thanks to Andrey and his crew for undergoing sleeplessness and literal pain to get us going again. I'd like to get some sleep myself now, but this is not the last you'll be hearing from me about the weekend.

Thanks,
Bernie

Bernie , I wat to thank you and your team for the dedicated effort you all put forward in resolving this problem...........and like you said ,other sites have issues often...and those are sites that impact people's lives on more important issues (banks, credit cards.....) than a fantasy baseball game!!!!

One thing I think most of us would like to know however is what,if any, the cmpensation will be???? Will it be game credit??? or something else?

Thank you again .......

The Bloody Aftermath

Postby Cruiser » Sun Feb 26, 2006 8:22 am

My teams went a combined 4-23 during the Day That Time Forgot.

I knew I should have ranted and vented instead of waiting patiently! ;)

All I can say is, I'm glad that's over (for many reasons), and I'm sure you guys worked as hard as you could (though I must say, Andrey, the story would have sounded much better if they had to amputate your finger, instead-seriously, I hope you get better soon).

Go take a nap guys; there's time to sift through the fallout later. Thank you.

Bernie and Andrey--Thanks. it's obvious you guys had limited resources and control over how this went. Tough place to be in--thanks for working the tough middle ground between us and management.

Compensation aside for legitimate cases, when folks talk about part time job and have a kid and saying the $25 is a big deal, yadda yadda--I'm at a complete loss for how an individual's screwed up priorities become TSN's responsibility.

these same folks think it's the responsibility of responsible people to finance their irresponsible decisions.

Hey my kid didn't get to eat dinner yesterday because I was so distraught--you owe me a dinner. And I couldn't afford breakfast because of my Hummer payment. Somebody must pay for my misfortune!
