Joe McGinnity and the New York Giants shut out the Cleveland Indians 9 - 0 in game one of their Division Series. McGinnity (1-0) had great command all night. He didn't walk a batter and needed only 95 pitches to finish off the Indians. The Tribe went down in order in five different innings, as McGinnity allowed only 5 hits while striking out two Indian hitters. Not only was McGinnity dominant on the mound, he showed some offensive prowess with a triple in the 8th.

The Giants didn't take long to get started offensively, sending nine men to the plate in the first inning and scoring four times. Robby Thompson paced the Giant offense with 2 hits, including a 6th inning home run, a walk, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored. The Indians weren't able to retire the New York second baseman until Jim Kern struck him out in the eighth.

The Indians evened their Division Series with the Giants at one game a piece with a 5 - 2 victory at the Polo Grounds. The top three in the Indians line up did the bulk of the damage, accounting for 8 of the Tribes 10 hits, all 5 RBI and 3 of the runs scored. After Ross Youngs RBI single put the Giants up 1 - 0 in the first, Joe Gordon put the Indians ahead to stay with a 2 run homer to left center off of Amos Russie (0-1). Rocky Colavito, the Indians number three hitter, padded the lead with an RBI double in the fifth. Monte Irvin's RBI single in the bottom half got the lead back to one. But the Giants wouldn't score again and lead off man BabyDoll Jacobson hit a 2 run homer in the ninth to ice the victory.

Hal Newhouser (1-0) got the victory, allowing 2 runs on seven hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out 6. Dennis Eckersly got a six out save for Cleveland. Russie gave up 3 runs on 7 hits over his 7 innings of work.

The series moves to Cleveland for game 3 tonight where 21 game winner Jake Weimer will take on the Indians Mel Harder.

Twenty game winner Jake Weimer got his first post season victory, giving up 3 runs over 7 2/3 innings as the Giants took the third game of their division series with Cleveland 9 - 3. The Giant lefty balanced his remarkable total of 10 strike outs with an unimpressive total of 7 walks. The Indians added 7 hits to the 7 free passes they got from Weimer (1-0), but had trouble coming up with hits with runners in scoring position. The tribe was 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position against Weimer, 1 for 9 overall. Baby Doll Jacobson's 2 out 2 run double in the second marked their only success in run scoring situations. Cleveland stranded 12 runners on the night, including 3 in the first despite loading the bases with only one out.

The Giants had little trouble getting to Indians starter Mel Harder (0-1). He gave up 6 runs (3 earned) on six hits and five walks over 4 innings. The Giants scored 3 unearned runs against Harder in the first thanks to a Ray Chapman error on the game's very first at bat. Travis Jackson drove in the first run with an RBI ground out and Milt Stock followed with a 2 run triple. Felipe Alou added a 2 run double in the third, and later in the inning Weimer helped his own cause by working a bases loaded walk. Ross Youngs had RBI singles in the fifth and ninth and Bill Terry had an RBI single in the 8th to round out the Giant scoring. Toby Harrah hit a solo home run in the 7th to cut the lead to 7 to 3, but the Indians were not able to get any closer.

BabyDoll Jacobson had a three run homer and a run scoring triple to lead the Indians to a 5 - 3 victory in game 4, setting the stage for a decisive game 5 tonight at the Polo Grounds. Joe Wood (1-0) allowed 3 runs (2 earned) over 7 innings for the victory. Wood was the only Indian with an RBI other than Jacobson, singling home Gorman Thomas ahead of Jacobson's home run in the second. Dennis Eckersly struck out 4 over two innings to record his second save of the series.

John Burkett (0-1) allowed 4 unearned runs in 4 innings. Unfortunately for Burkett, the error that proved to be his undoing was his own. The Giant runs came on a Ray Fosse passed ball, a Monte Irvin sacrifice fly and Bill Terry's RBI single.

Addie Joss and Joe McGinnity square off in game 5 tonight.

Cleveland firstbaseman Baby Doll Jacobson led off the game with a home run into the left field seats and Addie Joss (1-1) shut down the New York offense as the Indians beat the Giants 3 - 0 in the decisive fifth game of their division series. Jacobson's home run was all Joss needed, but Ray Fosse added a 2 run double in the second that gave Cleveland a three run lead that the Giants never threatened. Joss allowed just 5 hits, all singles, hitting a batter and walking none. The Giants didn't have a runner in scoring position until Monte Irvin and Bill Terry had back to back singles with two out in the ninth. Felipe Alou came up as the tying run, but Joss got him to pop out to short to end the game.

Joe McGinnity (1-1) took the loss for the Giants, giving up 3 runs over 6 innings on 6 hits and 2 walks.

Jacobson was named the series MVP. In one of the great performances in division series history, he went 11 for 22 over the series' five games. Hitting primarily out of the lead off spot, he drove in 9 of Cleveland's 16 runs and homered in each of the Indians' 3 victories. The Tribe will meet the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Championship Series.

The Pittsburgh Pirates swept the New York Yankees in their division series to advance to the Championship Series. Pirate starter Jack Chesbro (1-0) was the story in game 1. He didn't allow an earned run and gave up only 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9 in a complete game victory. Roy Thomas had 3 hits and a walk, stole a base and scored three times for the Pirates in their 4-1 victory. Lefty Gomez (0-1) took the loss for the Yankees.

Game 2 saw another complete game victory for the Pirates. Bob Veale (1-0) led the Pirates to a 6 - 1 win, allowing 6 hits and 5 walks while striking out 6. The Pirates got to Yankee starter Whitey Ford (0-1) with 3 runs in the fourth on an RBI double from series MVP Freddie Lindstrom, a Fresco Thompson sacrifice fly and a Benito Santiago RBI single. The Yankees only run came on Charlie Keller's RBI ground out in the first.

Game 3 provided more offense than the first two games combined for both teams. The Pirates had built an 11 - 2 lead going into the top of the ninth, the big blow coming on Santiago's 3 run homer in the 6th. The Yankee offense, which had managed only 4 runs in the series' first 26 innings, finally came to life with 6 runs in the game's final frame. Cathcer Elston Howard punctuated the New York ourbust with a grand slam off of Pirate reliever Ramon Hernandez. But it was too little too late. Following Howard's blast, pinch hitter Billy Martin grounded to third to end the game and send the Pirates to the series.

Cleveland right fielder Rocky Colavito hit a pair of 3 run homers to account for all of the Indians' scoring and lead them to a 6 - 2 victory of the Pittsburgh Pirates in game 2 of the Championship Series. The win sends the Indians home to Cleveland with a 2 games to none lead and staff ace Addie Joss on the mound for game 3.

Colavito homered in the third and the fifth, staking Hal Newhouser to a six run lead. Newhouser (2-0) had no difficulty protecting the lead, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits and a walk while striking out 6 over 8 innings. Newhouser also contributed with the bat, going three for four and scoring on both of Colavito's home runs. Pittsburgh starter Sam Leever (1-1) was no match for the Indian lefty, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks over 5 innings. As is often the case, both walks came around to score.

Cleveland's enthusiasm about going home up two games to none was tempered by a series ending hamstring injury to starting catcher and club house favorite Ray Fosse. The Pitrates have injury trouble of their own. Thirdbaseman and Division Series MVP Freddie Lindstrom reaggravated an ankle injury and will not be able to return unless the Pirates can extend the series and bring it back to Cleveland.

Cleveland exploded for 6 runs in the first inning and then held off Pittsburgh for a 6-5 game one victory. The Indians got to Pirate starter Jack Chesbro (1-1) for 5 runs, all earned, on 5 hits and a walk. Joe Gordon hit a two run homer to dead center and Gorman Thomas had a two run double to highlight the attack. Chesbro was only able to record one out before giving way to Xavier Rescigno who allowed a run of his own before finally ending the top of the first.

Mel Harder was just good enough to win, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) over 5 innings on 6 hits and 4 walks. Despite the starting pitchers' troubles, both bullpens were superb. Paul Assenmacher went 3 innings allowing only one hit and one walk. His only tense moment came in the sixth when Honus Wagner hit a two out double to center with Roy Thomas aboard, but Gorman Thomas made a great throw to cut down the tying run at the plate. The Pirates never had another baserunner and Dennis Eckersly pitched a perfect ninth to get his second save of the post season.

A change of scenery seems to be just what the Pirates needed. Since leaving Pittsburgh, where they dropped the first two games of the Championship Series, they've taken two in a row from the Indians to tie the series at 2. In game four they wasted no time getting to Cleveland starter Joe Wood, scoring 5 in the first and 3 in the second on their way to a 10 - 1 victory. The Pirates have made a habit of getting off to a quick start in Cleveland, scoring 9 first inning runs in two games.

Wood (1-1) gave up 8 hits and 3 walks in three innings of work. Pirate firstbaseman Ted Kluszewski delivered the big blow with a three run homer to right in the top of the second inning. He also had an RBI single in the first and finished the game with 3 hits, 2 runs scored and 4 RBI.

Rip Sewell (1-0) got the complete game victory for the Pirates, giving up 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. The only run he allowed came on a 2 out RBI single off the bat of Joe Azcue in the bottom of the fourth. Sewell helped his own cause at the plate with a two-out, two-run single in the first. Rightfielder Paul Waner got the Pirate scoring started with a two-run first inning triple and Fresco Thompson added an RBI double in the fourth and an RBI single in the seventh to complete the Pirate scoring.

Bob Veale fanned 14 Indians on his way to a complete game 5 - 3 victory in game 3 of the Championship Series. Despite giving up 7 free passes, he was able to scatter 6 hits and limit Cleveland to single runs in the third, sixth and seventh.

The Pittsburgh offense staked Veale (2-0) to a 4 run lead before he even took the mound. After Addie Joss got Roy Thomas to ground to short to start the game, Honus Wagner tripled over the head of Gorman Thomas in center. Paul Waner followed with an RBI single. After Kluszewski singled to make it first and second with one out, Andy Van Slyke got a hanging curve from Joss (1-2) and deposited it into the right-center field seats.

Albert Belle's solo shot in the seventh made it a one run game at 4 - 3, but Roy Thomas drove in Veale, who had doubled, in the top of the 8th to give the Bucs a two run cushion. That's the way it would end, as Veale set down the last seven Indians he saw in order, six via the strike out.

The Cleveland Indians took the 16EFL season 5 title 4 games to 3 over the defending champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Indians starter Mel Harder was named series MVP, winning games 1 and 5. In game 1 he was just good enough, going 5 innings and allowing 5 runs, 4 earned in a 6 - 5 Indians' victory. But in game 5, Harder was dominant, earning the MVP honor with a 7 hit shut out that gave the Indians a 3 games to 2 lead in the series.

In a series that had seen the home team lose each of the first four games, the Indians came into their final home game of the year looking to change the trend. In the first inning Joe Gordon drew a one-out walk and Rocky Colavito reached on Fresco Thompson's error to put runners at first and second for Albert Belle. The Tribe's big left fielder lined a single to right and Gordon tested Paul Waner's arm, scoring just ahead of the throw to give the Indians a 1 - 0 lead and allow the runners to move up to second and third. Toby Harrah followed with an RBI ground out, staking Harder to a 2 - 0 lead after one.

Harder was up to the task with a little help from his defense. With first and second and one out in the second, Harrah made a nice bare handed play on Pirate starter Jack Chesbro's slow roller along the third base line. In the third, center fielder Gorman Thomas gunned down Honus Wagner trying to score from first on Waner's double. Gordon made a nice play on Thompson's ground ball between first and second to end the fourth, and cather Joe Azcue leaned into the first row of seats to get Wagner on a foul pop with a man aboard in the fifth.

With the Pirates looking snake bit, Harrah took Chesbro's hanging slider over the center field fence with Colavito aboard to extend the lead to 4 - 0 in the sixth. Harrah's blast seemed to completely deflate the Bucs, who managed only an Andy Van Slyke walk over the game's final three innings. A Colivito sacrifice fly and a Belle single in the seventh completed the Cleveland scoring in their 6-0 victory.

Harder threw 109 pitches, walking 2 and striking out 2 in the complete game shut out victory. His effort afforded an Indian bullpen that had logged 14 innings in the series' first 4 games some much needed rest.

The Pirates bounced back to take the next game behind a masterful pitching performance by Sam Leever. The 2-0 victory allowed the Pirates to tie the series at 3 games a piece. The Pirate right hander recorded a 6 hit shutout, walking two and striking out three. Leever was helped by 4 Pirate double plays and a great throw by center fielder Andy Van Slyke to nail Rocky Colavito at the plate in the 4th. After that, Leever faced the minimum 15 batters over the next 5 innings to complete the shutout.

Third baseman Freddie Lindstrom had the only Pirate miscue, booting a Gorman Thomas ground ball in the 4th, but he made up for it with three hits, scoring the Pirates second run on Benito Santiago's sacrifice fly in the home half of the 4th. The Pirates' first run came on a Paul Waner homer in the first.

Cleveland starter Hal Newhouser was effective, but the 2 runs he allowed on 6 hits and 4 walks over 7 innings was all the support Leever needed. The Pirate win forced a game seven at Forbes Field the following night.

The Indians took game seven by a score of 5 - 4 to clinch the series and claim their first 16EFL championship. The Tribe built an early 5 - 0 lead and Addie Joss (2-2) and Dennis Eckersly (S4) were able to hold off the Pirates for the win.

The Tribe opened the scoring in the second, loading the bases against Pirate starter Bob Veale (2-1) on a single, a walk and an error by secondbaseman Fresco Thompson. Ray Chapman followed with a single to left scoring Joe Gordon but Gorman Thomas was thrown out at the plate by Roy Thomas. After a Joss tapper in front of the plate forced Joe Azcue at third, Toby Harrah singled in Chapman. Baby Doll Jacobson walked to reload the bases and Veale uncorked a 59 footer that got by Benito Santiago, allowing Joss to score the final run of the inning. Cleveland added single runs in the fourth and fifth on RBI singles by Albert Belle and Chapman.

The Pirate offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth, with Paul Waner's bases clearing double doing the bulk of the damage. Thompson lead of the inning with a double into the gap in left center. He came around to score on consecutive errors by Jacobson at first and Harrah at third. Thomas's flare to center loaded the bases, and after Honus Wagner struck out, Waner emptied them with his double over Gorman Thomas's head in center.

But the Pirates just couldn't push the tying run across over the next four innings. A two out pinch hit single by Gene Alley gave them first and third in the sixth, but Thomas popped up to Chapman to end the threat. Waner tripled with one out in the seventh, but Joss fanned Ted Kluszewski on three pitches and then got Freddie Lindstrom to ground to second.

Eckersly was dominant over the next two innings, striking out 4 while allowing only a two out single to Santiago in the eighth. He ended it by getting Waner to chase a 2-2 pitch out of the zone and his teammates mobbed him on the mound in front of a silent Pittsburgh crowd.
