Gaylord Perry 1977 - fish or cut bait

Early in the season but [b:a0e313334a]Gaylord Perry[/b:a0e313334a] is trending toward his 1977 season card with high HR ratio against RHBs (yielded > 2 HRs to light slugging but "N" capable hitters) and poor success against LHBs.

Scanning other leagues, the card isn't a complete bust but it not worth $6.6M. My experience is limited on replacement type pitchers (not drafted but usable)

Any thoughts on Andy Messersmith, Hooten, Hand?

I agree with voovits....I also believe it is Gaylord's best year so patience would have paid off.

Also, it is bad luck to separate the Perry brothers. Jim might be pitching OK now but he will falter because he will run out of Gaylord's foreign substances.

Too bad, fortunes are made and lost on impulsive decisions. :wink:

Under most circumstances, I'd hang on Gaylord's card for a few more starts to confirm the split trends e.g., RHB HRs. However, the rate the free agent cards are churning - I doubted the SP selections would get better.

I've been to this rodeo before and have seen (as you have) sub-par 42 game starts to $$ stars - and you hang on to them cause the dice will break soon or later. On the other hard, you can hold on to a player too long when the dice have been hitting your card and coming up less than roses.

Yes, Gaylord's card year is based on three starts (hardly a sample) but he yielded 5 HRs to RHBs in 20 innings compared to [b:8e26186d49]Tiant[/b:8e26186d49] /[b:8e26186d49] J. Perry[/b:8e26186d49] / [b:8e26186d49]Leonard[/b:8e26186d49] /[b:8e26186d49]Bosman[/b:8e26186d49] / [b:8e26186d49]Gerber[/b:8e26186d49] yielding the same over 90 innings.

Several of these HRs were to light hitting players so I presumed these came off of Gaylord's card. Otherwise, he followed in rotation by Tiant and Leonard - 1 HR over 50 innings.

As for his best year card, I'm not sure that year is it. From YountFan's data base

To that end, I gambled that I had [b:8e26186d49]Gaylord[/b:8e26186d49]'s 1977 card and for $6.58M it seems I'd over pay for the results.

Gaylord is usually on my pitching staff. He [i:e83a7ebef8]swallows[/i:e83a7ebef8] up the innings and usually does well. YMMV and I'm just a .500 coach!

I don't disagree about Gaylord's overall utility yet he doesn't have his best stuff for this league and is getting punished. Spending close to $7M to get 3 or 4 innings of work per puting is tough on the back end of the bullpen.

Tough to gauge what card is here but [b:d0d8604f90]YountFan[/b:d0d8604f90]'s data shows 1977 as less than desirable.
