McCann and Varitek are indeed hurt and it used Amezaga to catch. Bernie!!!!

Wow -- that's messed up.

It seems like there's only three possible explanations -- 1, the code has been changed, 2, there's some exception to the rule that no one can spot, 3, there's a hidden flaw in the Amezaga card that "reads" a phantom Catcher rating. As for "2," looking over the box scores it's hard to find any possible exception -- in fact, the two injuries happened in two different series.

I remember with one of my teams in the 2006 season set, I would hold my breath when I put my backup catcher, Mike Lieberthal (with his 7 injury), at DH due to injury. If he got hurt first, there was no issue since my starting catcher was now safe from injury. But if my starting catcher Pudge got hurt first, then not only would I get a noncatcher finishing the game, but Lieberthal was still prone to injury since he wasn't playing catcher. I was lucky that scenario never played out.

Turtle, did Amezaga catch an entire game, or just for the [u:8f13d1774b]remainder[/u:8f13d1774b] of the game? If it's for the "remainder of the game" we have already stated how that scenerio can play out.

I see both catchers are healthy right now.

I also checked the box scores. FWIW, doesn't look to me like Turtle is missing anything, and I agree with Wachovia as well.

McCann was starting at C when he was injured for 8 games. Varitek was starting his 4th game at C, with McCann still injured on the bench, when Varitek was injured. As Jeep noted, the consensus on the boards has always been that with only two C's on the roster, that cannot happen. But, it appears that's exactly what happened.

And if we've missed another healthy C on the roster, why wasn't he put in to start the next game (AND to sub for Varitek in the injury game), instead of Amezaga, who has no visible C rating?

Jeep: No, Amezaga started, and the two rated catchers actually got hurt in different series -- like I said above, the usual exceptions don't seem to apply.

On another subject ...

Speaking of injuries ... just have to share: games 13-15, in one series, I lost four of my 9 starters (no platoons) and all are inj-1:

MANIFEST DESTINIES
Delgado, Carlos - injured games 15 through 17
Norton, Greg - injured games 15 through 20
Vazquez, Ramon - injured games 14 through 16
Victorino, Shane - injured games 16 through 18

I have a 13-man offense, so that means all four of my bench players will be starting game 16.

That's a first for me (with all inj-1 guys), but it's bound to happen eventually.

Another twist

Postby mesquiton » Sat Mar 14, 2009 7:09 pm

Amezaga's card does appear to be fuqt up. At the top, it shows him batting at 6 positions (tho not C), but he's rated defensively below at only 4 positions. If you look at his line on the TSN player spreadsheet, he's rated defensively at all 6 positions (tho still not at C). So, maybe there's indeed an "invisible" C rating that was also lost to a typo in translation.

Here's Amezaga's fielding stats from ESPN.com:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=5066&context=fielding

He played four positions as his card states, none at catcher, and none at catcher in his career. So something is indeed rotten in Denmark.

Has anyone tried to set their lineup listing Amezega at Catcher? If it would allow you to do that then would probably confirm an errant catcher rating.

Totally off-subject and of no interest to anyone but me, but I can't resist following-up: Would you believe that one of my four bench players -- in fact, the back-up catcher! (here, playing first) -- got hurt in games 16-18? Hal hates me. (Btw, lost game 16, 8-0 -- what a surprise.)
