Playing mostly in pitchers parks, when all else failed for Carew or Keith Hernandez, I always opt for their cheaper brother, Mike Hargrove. Andre Thornton is too "small ball park" and alot more expensive, so I look first for "Grover". With the dice game, whenever Hargrove came up to bat, we felt compelled to roll the dice in our hand for a very long time. Simpletons that we were. :oops:

The problem with Grover (other than the fact that as an Indians fan I'm still pissed at his poor managing in the 95 WS...sorry but that Indians team that went 100-44 should have pounded the Braves) is that at a key run producing position like 1B he just isn't that attractive. Even Carew and K Hernandez can be 100 run/RBI producers but you just don't see those kinds of seasons from Grover. He doesn't hit many doubles or homers, he can't run, and only one card has any postive clutch.

The problem is [b:fe27f36fc4]McCovey[/b:fe27f36fc4] and [b:fe27f36fc4]Howard [/b:fe27f36fc4]are typically opening day cards and [b:fe27f36fc4]Hargrove[/b:fe27f36fc4] doesn't appear to be such a player.

Otherwise, Hargrove has four years where he isn't subject to 15 game injuries and one of those years - you can quickly drop.

With LHBs rare at this position, Hargrove is a decent replacement player.

I've got Mike Hargrove on my 80s Metrodome team and his OBP is through the [i:82d1d5b882]roof[/i:82d1d5b882]! If Reggie Jackson has his '70 card, I might acquire Mike. Nothing wrong with BBs.

I still probably take my chances on Shamsky, Thompson, Velez, Oglivie, Torre before Hargrove...If he were maybe a 1-14 runner or at least a * to make the pitcher hold him I could see more of his value, but there are too many guys who can get on, steal bases, and score runs for less.

I want my first baseman to dive home all the run and shoot guys up top and Grover just doesn't seem to do that.

Just curious - how much do you think / feel a [b:995faf030d]*[/b:995faf030d] is worth in TSN's SOM?

In the board game, you have the option of holding the runner before the next at bat. When you hold, any groundball followed by a "++" becomes a SINGLE** (all runners advance two bases).

Given we know little about the TSN game engine (does HAL hold all the time?) and you need to hit those ++ chances, my selection is based on whether that player can get on first base. In the case of [b:995faf030d]Mike Hargrove[/b:995faf030d], he has four season where that is possible.

Otherwise, your replacement choices are noted but how many keeper seasons do [b:995faf030d]Shamsky, Thompson, Velez, Oglivie, Torre [/b:995faf030d] have compared to Hargrove?
