Any interest in a new theme league?

Postby voovits » Wed Apr 08, 2009 9:15 pm

I'm sure this has been done in the past, but I've never seen it done. I was wondering if there's be an interest in a crossover/keeper 70's to 80's league.
The theme would consist of 2 seasons, 1 in the 70's and 1 in the 80's. Beforehand we will draft a set number of players that appear in BOTH games. I haven't gotten all the details worked out yet, I'm thinking 14 per team (9 batters 5 pitchers maybe).
The players you draft will be on your team in both the 70's and 80's games and can not be dropped, so they're stuck on your rosters all season long.
I have already created a list of players that appear in both games and it's a pretty big list, there are certainly enough players to have 14 per team. I want a lot of them because I want to force some guys who would normally not play into lineups.

So that is my idea. I'll create a signup thread with rules which may not necessarily be set in stone (I'm still trying to work on them to make it as fair as possible), we can debate them if necessary, and the player list and salaries if there seems to be enough interest.

Nobody else interested? I'm not going to bother if there is no interest. It's going to be a lot of work to create the list, rules, and sort things out, so I'm not going to bother if there is no more interest. :(

its a holiday weekend and people will be in their real life. Family events get in the way of SOM play

I suppose, but I posted this Wednesday, and 2 days and 58 views later only 1 person expressed interest. There have also been other posts to the board.
Makes me think nobody wants to play.
I do understand that there are currently a lot of theme leagues going on, so waiting a while is no problem if necessary.
I don't mean to come off as pushy, sorry about that.

I would be interested. Perhaps we play two seasons, the first we fill out our remaining 11 spots with 70s then the next season with 80s.

I wonder how many players are represented in both the 70s and 80s? Might be fun to find out. Perhaps sometime we could have a league made up of only of players who have cards in both decades. Some guys have real stud cards in the 70s and dud cards in the 80s.

I may have to find out.

I have the player list.
There are 134 hitters and 93 pitchers.
if every player is drafted, that's almost 19 players per roster.
I was toying with the idea of perhaps 9 hitters and 5 pitchers per roster.
Salary control is the main issue. I did a 12 team mock draft and some teams are strapped for cash while some teams have a lot of extra free cash. Meanwhile the teams that spent more are not necessarily better.
Also the players are more expensive in the 70's, so I was considering the possibility of a 100 mil cap, but that'll allow for too many of those players getting benched.
I'm working on the possibility of breaking them down into tiers and forcing a certain number of draft picks per tier.

Of course I could have easily made a mistake in my math or in the player list. There were a lot of players to go through so one could easily have been missed. If anyone does go through the list and comes up with a different number than what I got, then a mistake was likely made my yours truly.

Voovits, I got 139 hitters and 61 pitchers, for an even 200. Perhaps we should swap spreadsheets. PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you mine.

Something that might be fun would be to have a league that starts with a draft of the players carded in both the 70's and 80's. That would come up to about 5-6 pitchers and 11-12 hitters, depending upon whose numbers are correct. These players must stay on your team for the duration of both leagues. The rest of the roster could be made up only of players whose value is $2.5 or less. These guys could be dropped and picked up as desired.

The 70's teams would be loaded, as there is plenty of talent there that does not carry over to the 80's. The trick would be to draft wisely.

It would have to be $200M to fit the 70's. There would be plenty of leftover cash in both leagues, but with the roster limits it would not matter.

I'm not trying to take over. You have a good theme idea started and I think the league will fill.

Don't worry about it. I'm open for suggestions on making the theme league work and I like the 2.5 mil limit on players. It's an idea to work on.
I will PM you shortly
