Another one...

Postby 1crazycanuk » Sat Mar 04, 2006 1:06 am

Another one of my teams just finished 76-86!! Argh...that's at least my THIRD team to finish with that record. I finished last in runs scored and second in pitching. Glad this team is done.

Webb was 10-3 then lost NINE in a row! :(

You had 11 million spent on 2 guys in the pen.

Next time either use Gordon alone with some cheapies or use Looper alone.

My favorite 2 closers in Petco are Graves and Urbina, btw. (Cheap, effective arms that give up BPHR's)

Canuk--I say this with a smile :D...
You're still overspending on pitching in Petco. Gordon and Clemens are overkill. I know I know--"but they've done well fro me".
Well yes they better at that price--but if you price their performance based ERA, Wins, and saves, with ERA weighted by innings pitched, and then divide it out by their salary--I bet you'll find you're paying more for them than folks like Maddux or duchscherer. A 5-man staff in petco could easily be anchored by OlPerez and JPeavy types.

In fact, another approach is to get people like OdPerez, GMaddux, NLowry, DHaren, MMulder, etc. One sideds and neutral types that you can mix and match. Keep a couple solid guys to pitch every 5th day, then get a few others to mix and match in conditions favorable to them. Use the savings to buy solid hitters who play good D and have decent clutch (clutch is underrated in Petco--but you'll find your guys having lots of 2-out rallies with as tough as Petco is on hitters.

Just call it a season Canuk and take these lessons into 2006. But somehow I think you're still clinging on to winning in Petco without a big O--and while it can be done, your margin for error is tiny--you better have an ideal balance of hitters that all perform up to expectation which will be tough to do.

Well thanks for the advice guys. Will have to reconsider my strategy.

Frank...I had a big O team and ended up having to drop Loretta AND Pierre to get some D. I also had a Petco team (with Gordon and Nathan) make the finals. I'm wondering why my pitching was overkill but people will use hitting overkill in Coors?

$9M Petco bullpen

Supporting the "overspent on the bullpen strategy", here's a link to my best Petco finish. Abreu, Mora and Nevin helped as well. :)

Petco Team

Postby PAULMINICUCCI » Sat Mar 04, 2006 3:23 pm

This team is in first place (although it has been slipping lately) but is fourth in batting and first in pitching.

I actually lost several close games. Anyhow I subscribe to the pitching idea that one stud and some good pitching will work. Like other guys I wanted to get more production. While this team will not hit more than 135 home runs I still feel like we have plenty of offense.

Sac--your link is incorrect--you'll need to cut and paste a URL that has your id# in it--try league stats and right click from that URL

Canuk--Notice I said hitters who play good D. You need good D. And without seeing the rest of the Petco team that went to the finals--saying you had nathan and gordon doesn't really yield anything convincing.

Remember you're getting feedback that's unique to your team and its div and the other players you have on your team. I also said you [i:593a5fee1b]can[/i:593a5fee1b] win with different strategy but it's far less common, as I think you've seen personally and from many posters.

Regarding Coors, I don't know--in legitimate (i.e., non-theme type leagues) leagues I've seen Coors teams do well that had solid bats but very solid pitching. Folks like Oswalt, Clemens, Shields, Mahay etc. If you throw guys on your staff with 5 BPHRs on each side and 25 -30 OBs with full BP singles, they'll get trounced. If you're referring to 2003, that was a whole different deal--much different pricing structure made certain players very underpriced.

Plus, it still depends on your division--are you employing specialty staffs due to one-sided opponents or parks? That makes a huge difference. You can't just make statements like "the best 2B choice for all teams is:". It depends. I'd play Loretta with Izturis and maybe a cheap 2e backup if I had a team that was smacking XBHs. If you put Loretta at the top of the order on a team that otherwise relies on high OBs, SI**, and not much XBH power, coupled with his marginal D, it could prove his net worth to be lower than a team that just wants him on base to knock him in outright.
i.e., he's not an auto-hold I don't believe and runs at something like a 1-14 clip. Not ideal for a small ball team unless he's your run producer.

One thing about 2005 is I think there were more ways/styles to win with--there's no one lineup that will win every time--believe me folks would find it. The pricing was much better this year I think (granted there were still good player combinations that seemed to win more often than not)
