Rookie in division with PJ's little run machine...ideas?

Postby JIMDAKE » Sat Mar 04, 2006 12:27 am

OK, so for my first SOMO league I have to play a pile of games against PJ's 'Demented Discounts'. It's a pitcher's-park league (2 Busch, 2 Shea) only Fenway & Tiger (hechojazz) for longball.

Hopefully enough pitching to get to Eck.
Been out of the game a (long) while and wasn't used to ballpark effects..got looking at my sluggers AFTER picking Busch and realized maybe not the best match. But I was in StL in Nov as the demolition went on...sad, it was a GREAT place for fans. But I digress. Sooo...thoughts on how to play this team? Thanks. Much much to learn.

Might want to downgrade your 2 LH SP's to .75 and use the cash to upgrade Carter for better OBP.

definately dump Mcwilliams. Falcone is not bad and still pretty cheap so wouldnt be that bad to keep him. Your 4 starters are good but you want at least one lefty*. Deshais and Liebrandt are very good for the cost. Alexander is good but he starts alot of leagues on the free agent wire (as do Deshais and Liebrandt, but good lefties are hard to find).
Soto will be excellent in a pitchers park.
If there is something you really want and cant afford consider dumping Eck for a 3million dollar reliever. Eck is obviously very good but for 6million bucks you hate to be stuck with his 2 heavy R years. Id switch Nelso for a LH .75 reliever if there any good ones left. Kipper possibly?

I asume Bonilla is your DH so dump Phillips. finally, Carter is in the wrong park. Parker, Davis and Joyner should provide all the power you need in Busch. Bonilla is still solid but you might want to switch him (and I would definately switch Carter) for 2 high AVG/OBP guys. Perhaps get some speed at the top of the order. Who were you planning on leading off? Herr? I think you need a good fast OBP guy to lead off more than a HR hitting #6. Joyner and Bell are very solid 6 and 7 in a pitchers park. Phil Bradley is pretty good and usually available. WWilson might also fit the bill (I prefer Bradley for the OBP but alot of people like Wilson).

Otherwise a very solid first team.

Thanks for input... with a lot of vets in the league playing smallball the OBP/BA guys on wire were pretty scarce. Plus "Dimented" is sitting on half of them. I upgraded Alexander to Leibrandt & figure I'll live with Falcone as spot start when I need another LHP.

UR right, Carter had to go. Kal Daniels was about the best OBP LF left so I went for BA & more fielding & speed & picked up McGee & will move Davis to LF, hate to give up the cannon in cf but kinda out of options. Picked up Seitzer but still holding Bonilla... not sure how DH will sort out. Figured I'd just play 'D' & speed at short and start Guillen for cheap. If he bombs I can make him bunt.

Opinions on a couple of crapshoots? Ever had these guys pay off?
-- LeFlore as a leadoff DH vs lefties to see if it's a DET year? Thought he might be fun to have on base. Also have Gerald Young, drafted him as a PR but maybe....
-- Tippy Martinez vs lefties? Nelson vs righties?

Lineup suggestions? (OK, Guillen 9th). Boy I'm having fun!

unless the teams in your division are more than 50% lefties, get Kal Daniels and dump Mcgee. get a cheap RH OF- any chance Zisk is available? to platoon with Kal if he cant hit lefties. Daniels should not be a free agent.
