Nixon and Marerro

Postby mbalsdon44 » Thu Mar 02, 2006 10:24 am

Ok, I have created my team to play in Coors. Waivers are still around and if everything goes to plan, I will the following:

$30 Mil on Pitching (gonzo relief and Nathan close)
Average OBP is .390 with the worst being Blalock (.355)

I like my team but I am not sure if I should have Nixon (9R) and Marrero (8L) switching it up depending on the pitcher. There seems to be injury concerns and probably a waste of money. Should I just get a good RF with this money instead? I will post my team if any one wants to look and possible suggest anything

Your lack of defense is going to kill you in Coors. Don't know which RFs are left for you or what other parks are in your division or which waiver pick you have to be able to offer more insite. I presume it is a DH league since you have Edgar. Not sure if you really need him, I see lots of injuries on your team, unless that is what you wanted to do.

I think that your Nixon/Marrero platoon would be a mistake, but that's not the most glaring problem I see with your roster at this point. It seems that you are looking very closely at OBP, which is always a good idea, but sacrificing too much from other statistics in your quest to get people on base.

1. People need to be in the lineup to get on base. Frank Thomas, Trot Nixon, Eli Marrero, Eric Chavez, and Edgar Martinez are all going to keep the trainer busy all season long.
2. It doesn't matter how many runs you score if you can't stop the other guy. A 3 at 2B and a 4 at SS? Yikes. Kotsay in center isn't going to make up for the other uglies up the middle.
3. Spending way too much on pitching when you should be trying to smash in your opponents skull. You could get by with a rotation of Weaver, Willis, Mulder, and Vazquez, or something similar, and spend that extra cash elsewhere.

I realize the league hasn't started yet, so you're in good shape with all of your money left and so much time before things get under way, but those are the most pressing needs I can see on your roster. Good luck.

I would give Nixon a try as DH with Walker in RF. Hopefully, one would always be healthy and you would just have to replace a DH when one is down. I think they compliment each other well in this scenario. One problem is you don't really have a RH slugger. How about even Konerko at 1B. You have plenty of OBP. It would cut down on injuries also. Maybe even a RH cheapo bopper to team with Nixon if you go that way.
