No, but you have that option to pick him up. Carded Players to your Franchise have priority.

Frank: A little clarification, please.

Am I correct to assume the following: The majority of uncarded pitchers on Dave's list are moot because the two hurlers with the highest salary will have to be claimed by the team they're carded to?

And is it also correct that an owner will only have to claim a high-salary, non-carded pitcher when that player a.) is NOT among the two highest salaried pitchers on another active franchise and higher valued than his/her own hurler and/or b.) higher valued and carded to a franchise not active in this go-round?

If I'm correct, the three highest valued pitchers Cardinals pitchers -- Pete Alexander, Three-Finger Brown and Steve Carlton -- are all off-limits to me because they're in the top tier on other active franchises.

Carrying that logic forward, would the Pirates have to arm wrestle for Dazzy Vance, who's fifth on my list, first on their lists and not on a carded team?

AeroDave anyone of those you can choose. Your Top 2 carded are YOUR Franchises Studs. If you prefer say Grove instead of Clemens and he is left unprotected by the A's you can draft him.

I am leaving now and will be gone until Saturday evening at the earliest. I don't begin to understand all of the above but I am drafting Phillippe and leever and will stick with that unless notified I HAVE to do something else.
I am assuming this rule meant to take your two highest CARDED franchise pitchers BUT if another eligible non-carded higher value pitcher was available you had a n OPTION to take him but did not have to.
If that is correct that is the way to explain it. If it is not correct then I am in the mix of people who do not undertsnd the rule.
Anyway I will be back on Saturday - good luck.

I think majicmg is right on with what I am thinking. It doesn't matter if I prefer Grove or not, the A's HAVE TO take him because the two highest priced A's are Bender and Grove, and both are carded to the As. I also could only take Chesbro if the Yankees take Vance instead of Chesbro. Marichal isn't an option for anyone else. It appears Clemens is, too, since the Yankees cannot take him because they have to take Gomez and either Chesbro or Vance. If I see it right, I should not have to protect Cy Young since I have to take him, nor do I have to protect Clemens since no one else can take him. Knowing this means that I need to rearrange my protected list and probably my projected team. I don't think I'd be able to afford Young, Clemens, Speaker, and Teddy Ballgame

Is this right, Frank? Hopefully by understanding my situation, everyone can understand their own. I think this will help with protection process. Here is my best estimation of people choices:

As
Bender - must
Grove - must

Red Sox
Young - must
Chesbro - (if not taken by Pirates or Yankees)
Marichal
Clemens

Carlton - must

Indians
Joss - must
Wynn - must

White Sox

Seaver
Lyons

Pirates
Vance (if not taken by Yankees or Cardinals)
Waddell (if not taken by Orioles)
Chesbro (if not taken by Red Sox or Yankees)
Bunning (if not taken by Tigers)
Phillippe
Willis
McDowell
Leever

Twins
Johnson - must

Yes, that is correct. That was my idea behind the 2 Studs, 2 Duds Theme. Think I could have been clearer on this. Again I apologize for any confusion.

Just so that I'm crystal clear, Frank: This means that, since the Cubs franchise is not active and since he's not available to anyone else, I have to include Three Finger on my roster since he'll be the highest valued pitcher available to me. Is this correct?
