Mixing *s and non * Pitchers

Postby rutkap » Sat Mar 04, 2006 7:33 pm

Any Ideas that work for mixing up * and non* pitchers. I want to use Sid Fat for a while now but have been afraid to. I know If I make him a #1 then all the * pitchers become nullified. If I make him a #2 how many starts will I miss of the el-sid goodness? any ideas of good rotations mixing them up? Thanks for the advice.

the most important thing is the more expensive guys should get the most innings. if you have 2 SP* and 3 non SP* guys, the 2* guys get 41 starts each. the 3 non SP* guys get 27 starts each. their salaries should reflect this. el sid is too expensive. swan and oil can are good.

Rotations

Postby rookssa1958 » Sat Mar 04, 2006 10:27 pm

The arguments are endless.

If you go with El Sid, and he is pitching well, you should start him every 5th game. If you have a 5 man rotation with 5 guys pitching well, it shouldn't matter to you if there is a * or not.

If you try to work with a 5 man, you can choose from all the pitchers available, * or no * as opposed to the 4 man where you are forced to continually replace pitchers with * only, so the advantage is to the non-*

The disadvantage is having to find one extra pitcher (and not getting as many starts out of them in the playoffs.

Lots of guys have won with El Sid, I have seen him on a lot of Penngray's teams.

Yountfan has a theory that pitchers "tire" between games 108 and 135 if they do not get some rest, a skipped start or something. (Likely to affect 4 man rotations more)

I guess that is the beauty of the game, there are a million ways to run a team, and each one has it share of supporters as well as those who have used it successfully and been disappointed by it.

* SP and non-* SPs arguement for the 80s is kind of a moot point in the end. Find the best pitchers period. You will notice almost all winning teams end up having non-* SPs and * SPs because its so much more important to just find a good pitcher then it is to worry about 4 man or 5 man rotations.

no disrepect to Yountfan but thats wrong. Pitchers do not tire at all there is no season pitch count function within the code that TSN uses.

Btw, sitting close to a TV will not hurt your eyes long term either ;)

so too much sex won't make you go blind?? (by the way, I'm typing this in Braille  )

I have used rotations with mixed *SP and SP, and have A) had very good success with it, and B) been criticized by some of the vets who like to give me a hard time, telling me I'm wasting $$.

I've had Vida Blue, Clancy, Key, Alexander and Joe Price on an absolute tear for the last 40 games in a league I'm in --- and I was SO AFRAID to pull the trigger and pick up Blue and Price, and drop Stieb and Black and pick up Clancy, Price and Blue because I was thinking, "I'm wasting money, I'm wasting money"

not the case --- I agree with Penn: find the best pitchers you can, period.

In another league, I had given a couple spot starts to Lapoint as the token 5th starter in a 4 man rotation. He did well, so I dropped my two trouble starters, picked up Nolan Ryan, and so far so good....

good luck!

penn and sean are 100% correct about it not mattering * or non-*. You want to have the best pitchers you can find... and if that is Sid or John Denny or Mark Langston it doesn't matter ... if they are good you want them pitching.

I agree that in mid-season if often makes a lot of sense to turn a four man rotation into a five man. But if I was starting a season from scratch with Sid on my team, I would make it a 5-man, to gain maximum use and efficiency.
