Ever had a successful team with an UGLY bullpen?

I am considering using one for an $80m team. I would have three real good starters, a scrub 4th starter, and lots of sub $1m relievers. I've never gone cheap on a pen before, so I am nervous, especially in a division full of hitting parks. But, I'm hoping that if HAL has lots of options (something Bernie feels makes HAL better), and I have IBB checked high, that HAL will utilize my (mostly) one sided relievers wisely. My #1-#3 SPs should compete with anyone, and I think my offense will score sufficient runs. Any one have an example of a successful team with an UGLY pen? :)

If there are a lot of hitting parks, you may have a problem IMO. I would slightly upgrade and grab two of the Eastwick/Lamp types who are low priced and can post good numbers, especially if back by a high powered offense. Even with many options, one sided guys will be exposed.

This team tied for division lead. I missed playoffs via tiebreaker. A better pen probably would have put me in playoffs:

This one wasn't all sub-$1M, but was close:

Here's a team with all pitchers under $1.00 mill that made the finals:

I can read the box scores now:

"HAL pinch hits for TF Brown leading 3-1 in the 7th with a runner on first and 1 out. The pinch hitter lays down a perfect sac bunt, but Sam Rice pops out to end the inning. Ben Wade replaces TFB and gets shelled for 7 in the 8th, final 8-3." :x

Always worth a try ... :)

LMAO! Yeah, I had nightmares about that very type of situation. So, I chickened out, and cut down my big three starters to upgrade my pen. I went from Camnitz, Clemens, Pollet & Billingham and all scub RPs, except for Lopez, who is a little over a $1m, to a rotation of Camnitz, Johnson, Bagby Sr. and a quartet of Hallahan, Drucke, Young (cheapie version) and Morton to share the #4 spot. Now, my pen still has Watt and Sisk in it, but they have Schultz to carry the load in the late innings.

Finished second in my division but won the championship with this horrible pen:

I think for me it comes down where to put those last important dollars trying to spread it around to come up with the best combination. I have the same bullpen on this team starting tonight that I have had for most of my West Side teams but I would prefer the pitching be a little better. It's tempting to take dollars from the pen to upgrade a pitcher but I like the pen. Tough call.
