You can only have 3 picks. You knew his pick would be later in the round than yours. It didn't make sense to me that you got his 3rd round pick knowing that. To be able to make that pick you would have to forfeit your 3rd round pick to be able to make the pick you acquired. That is my interpretation of the rules.
