CF: Geronimo vs. Manning

Howdy,

Both are "1"s. Is Geronimo worth the extra $1.1 million?

Thanks,
Larry

Geronimo has a bit better with the O and the D, but they need platoon mates

CG vs RHP .295 .350 .426 .776
RM vs RHP .285 .343 .379 .722

CG vs LHP .211 .258 .287 .545
RM vs LHP .223 .266 .302 .568

RM: http://users1.jabry.com/stratrat/hitter_cards.asp?playerid=37486&ballpark=All

They data says go with Manning

Platoon

Postby Larryrickenbacker » Mon Jun 08, 2009 9:29 pm

Howdy,

YountFan: One evening after my Bourbon nightcap, I wondered if a platoon of Rick Manning and Ron Laflore was viable. While Laflore is a "3", he steals bases like crazy and could be lifted in the late innings for Manning defensively..
I know, I know..a little too much Bourbon! LOL

that could work because the great Leflore is a force. Why not go for it. D is over-rated and it could just pay off.You don;t have to be drunk to see it could work, but then I don't drink so what do I know.

Just play RL full-time

vs LHP 321 .365 .470 .835
vs RHP.279 .328 .376 .704

YF, Interesting you would reccomend Leflore over Manning here but Metzger over others at SS in the other thread. :D

Leflore/Manning platoon is 5+m. Leflore hit's Manning-like vs RHP, so the difference is the 'd'. I am not sure I had a recommendation, but I would play RL over RM, he seems to have more to offer and he even has his own movie, One in a Million: The Ron LeFlore Story (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078035/) staring LeVar Burton

Regarding defense...Read these...

http://silenceisdefeat.com/~meandean/som/OffensevsDefense.zip

http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/DeanTSC/page2/

The second link goes to a study done about CF arms...In a nutshell it show not much difference btwn a "0" arm and a "-3" arm regarding extra runs allowed but a good bit of difference btwn a "0" and a "+3"...In all there is about a 20 run advantage btwn a -3 and a +3 CF arm.

Regarding Manning...I've used him in platoon with Blair before...An expensive combo but it was effective. I'd rather have B North for roughly the same money as Manning. You don't give up a ton of D, you get a better leadoff/higher OBP guy, and you get a better base stealer.

Forget Manning. I've taken Rick Miller quite a few times, and I've never taken Manning. Miller has better OBP and is a better and more versatile fielder.

If I have the extra $1.1 million, I'd take Geronimo, but I've taken Rick Miller more often.
