Cy Young - Goose Gossage (Yankees) going 13 and 12 with 45 saves and a 3.94 ERA. He had 158 strikeouts in 148.2 innings.

Batting Champ - Zack Wheat (Dodgers) .399. This is the first season that someone made a serious run at .400. He entered the final game of the season hitting .3997 and went 1 for 4 with a two run double. In the ninth inning of the final game he drew an intentional walk while the Dodger dugout littered the Sportsman's Park infield with trash, unable to hide their indignation. A hit in that final at bat would have brought his average back to .3997. (He came into the final weekend against the Cardinals hitting .403, but went 3 for 14 over the last three games.)

HR crown - Ralph Kiner (Pirates) 80.

RBI leader - Joe Dimmagio (Yankees) 200. This is the first 200 RBI season.

Wins leader - Sandy Koufax (Dodgers) 22-11. Greg Maddux (Braves) 20-9, and Rube Waddell (Orioles) 20-13 were the only other 20 game winners.

Strike out leader - Dazzy Vance (Dodgers) 264.

ERA leader - Greg Maddux (Braves) 3.31. It was Maddux's second consecutive ERA title

Eddie Collins (A's) stole 88 bases.

Jeff Reardon (Twins) saved 47 games.

The Yankees scored 1230 runs. Six different teams scored over 1000 runs.

The White Sox led the league in ERA (4.98), the only team under 5.00

The Yankees swept the Tigers while the A's went the distance against the Phillies, Al Simmons' solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning of game 5 deciding a very tight series. Despite having to battle down to the wire in the division series, the A's made short work of the Yankees in the championship, dispatching baseball's best regular season team in 5 games. Mark McGwire hit 5 homeruns in the 5 games, and Rollie Fingers had a win and two saves.

I'm not surprised that the top two teams are the Yanks and Giants, but it is very surprising that the Phillies and Pirates, two franchises with less than stellar records historically, are out performing the Dodgers and Red Sox.

Then again only playoff team I had--the one where I called the cap Now the Twins off to decent start in league where I make the rule so in closing does anyone know where I can come up with 11 Dummys that will let me make all the rules? :twisted:

It's no surprise that the quality players from the early era Pirates keep them in contention despite mediocre their mediocre teams from later eras.
