R.I.P, Kirby Puckett

Whatever his recent problems, Kirby was one of the most exciting players of the 80s. He was someone a real guy could root for: small, more than a little round, unfailingly gregarious and gracious to fans. At the age of 44, he takes his leave of us, far too early.

I had the pleasure of living in Minnesota when Puck was there and watching this guy play. UN-believable. I don't know if I've seen anybody love playing the game more. And I thought it was a tragedy when his eye went. :(

Kirby was one of my first true favorites. I fell for that guy on a whim and a dare. He was round and short with the great name, and I defended his honor in high school and beyond. Good old Kirby. He'll always be my startint CF...

Proud to have Kirby on my two active 80's teams...
Minnesota, of all cities, needs baseball. With the recent contraction scare, we can thank Kirby for helping to bring the Twins that run of success in the 80s.
As my buddy pointed out at the time they were threatening to axe Minnesota, "It's Minnesota! It's the heartland! There absolutely has to be baseball in Minnesota!"
That's coming from a Red Sox fan who would gladly give up our spending advantage to keep baseball where it belongs.

I am surprised to say I cried. I still am. I think only two other HOFers died younger than this great man, Roberto Clemente and Lou Gehrig. Too young, way too young. I am too sad.

Although I was rooting for the Braves, I'll never forget Kirby skying (!) for that blast and hauling it in to save the game in the Series. And then he hits a game winning dinger!!
What a clutch player, he will be missed.

I was at that the games in the 91 series in Minnesota.
Most forget that Puck tripled home the first run of the game in the 1st inning before his catch in the middle innings and his game ending homerun.
A gamer. Period.
