Bought 1st '69 Team - Now I'm Scared!

Our historical single season sets

Looking good. Rooker and Abernathy are getting the job done.

I recently made some adjustments to a team, and there are some similarities between the two. Should be interesting to see how things play out. I have F. Robby, Sanguillen, and .... Fregosi now. (wish there were an emoticon for whistling while rolling eyes) Hey, sometimes a man just has to swallow his pride. After 66 games I had given up 53 unearned runs. Needed defensive upgrade, and Fregosi was a free agent  He's not hitting his weight after 9 games, though, which has me a little concerned.

Fregosi replaced Michael at SS. Also picked up Hovley for LF, moved Taylor to 1B, and dropped Epstein. Hated to get rid of my only LH power, but this team was not going to win with that defense. Alou plays LF against lefties, and is late-inning defensive replacement. I'm 7-2 since making the changes.

Other parks in division: Dodger, Shea, and Jarry

7-2, good work. I am NOT of the school that [i:91cb655325]dumping[/i:91cb655325] is anathema. Sometimes your opponents really don't have or are able to give what you need.

I look at this way: if Billy Beane can win on 1/2 the budget, I should be able to give up as much as 5 mil, especially to fix holes. I.E. it's easy, even if you are experienced, to miss what weapons you may need vs division opponents.

[b:91cb655325]FREGOSI[/b:91cb655325] - What's the big knock on this guy? His card is a thing of beauty aside from the neg-clutch symbols. My guess is that 90% of the teams where he doesn't hit or get on are batting him 6 thru 9. [b:91cb655325]I got him to bat 2nd period, and he will not move no matter what.[/b:91cb655325]

edit: Fregosi makes the 3rd out with runners on, so what? Hegan and his sick OBP lead off in front of Frankie.

BTW, you're winning so it's not "broke". Although I wonder if Fregosi would hit better with Unser leading off who has a *, thereby causing a few infield holes when Unser is on for Fregosi @ #2.

Hovely looks like a bargain vs RHPs. I'll get him next time.

Meaning the runner with a * is always held on when at first with no runner at 2nd?

My semi-limited experience with "HAL" when playing CD ROM, says 99% of the time (* runner on 1st, who otherwise gets a free lead - see the SOM rule book, which is not available here).

bleacher creature, I had similar suspicions about Fregosi and clutch, and your comments spurred me to get off my a** and look at the data. In his 9 games for me (6 batting leadoff, 3 batting 8th) he had 7 PAs in clutch situations. Went 0 for 6 with a walk (not intentional). Of his 6 outs in the clutch, only 1 "popout" indicating a lost hit due to negative clutch. By the way, 4 of these PAs occurred when he was batting leadoff, and 3 occurred while he was batting 8th.

Conclusion: negative clutch doesn't explain his poor performance at the plate in these 9 games (very small sample, I know). Probably just bad dice rolls. I am going to continue monitoring this, though, because I still have the gut feeling that this is why so many guys (including myself) have been down on Fregosi. The first time I had him I batted him 7th, and the guy in front of him was among the league leaders in IWs. Wasn't smart enough at the time to realize what was going on.

Your comment on putting someone with a * batting ahead of him is a good one. Just not sure that protecting or "hiding" Fregosi should have that much influence on my lineup. I'm skittish about batting him #2 because he grounds into more DPs than the average bear. His OBP really isn't good enough to be a regular leadoff hitter. I guess the question is, where in the order does he hurt me least?

That's why someone with speed in front of him is important too. W. Davis, if he doesn't steal, might whack a 2 bagger.

Exactly. Having that speed burner of front of Fregosi helps a lot.

Fregosi Clutch Watch

Postby pedakrla » Fri Mar 17, 2006 9:37 am

After 30 games, Fregosi has 19 PAs in clutch situations. He's lost 2 hits due to negative clutch. Doesn't sound like much at first, but 2 hits in 119 total at bats means he's lost 17 points off his BA. Now my .260 hitter is a .243 hitter. A .243 hitter who is even worse when you need him most.

Also kind of interesting: in 18 games batting leadoff, Fregosi has 8 clutch PAs (8 clutch PAs in 18 games). In 12 games batting 8th, he has 11 (11 clutch PAs in 12 games). Top of the order starting to look good for "hiding" Fregosi from clutch situations.

Something to think about--would you bat Fregosi at the top of the order if you also had Joe Morgan? Another guy who derives a lot of his value from his walks?

Top of the Order

Postby bleacher_creature » Sat Mar 18, 2006 11:45 am

It seems to me that in constructing a no-DH lineup, the leadoff man becomes critical. It's nice to have a .300 hitter there IMO. Heck even in an AL 2006 leauge it's a good idea.

In no-DH, it seems to me that there will be many more situations where the 7th or 8th hitter gets on, and is moved up by the pitcher via a 1 out bunt. Whuch is what you want HAL to do for you of course.

Up steps Joe Morgan and WALKs? How about W. Davis, who lines one into CF, scoring the #7 hitter?

That's why I batted Fregosi 2nd, and that's why I don't think I'd draft Morgan other than to bat 2nd.

My team is slumping, but for some reason I'm not panicking. I believe they will turn it around. They seem to be struggling with the teams that have a ton of bats, crumby D, and mediocre pitching.
