how do I stop my losing ways???

Postby scorpio » Sun Aug 09, 2009 3:46 am

I was the hottest team in baseball, I was two games out of first place. That was then this is now, I have tailspinned from second to last losing 18 out of my last 24. Going from 2 games out of first to 10 games. I was swept twice. What can I do, ride out the storm???

Hard to say over what period of time you are talking about. The largest factor may be luck. If it is over a greater time span, than it could be the phenomenon that strong teams stand pat and weak teams make changes. Some of those teams making changes will get worse, but others will get better and start to beat the initially strong teams.

Make sure you have read the Tips for Newbies "sticky" thread near the top of the message boards.

Jody Davis is my best player. How sad is that?

Or in a league with me. I have a team that is 34-50. Started out 28-23 and is now 6-27 over the last 33 games with a 10 game and 9 game losing streak included in that streak. I have never had a team go that bad after looking like a solid team. I have no clue how to turn it around.

ok, I probably made the least amount of changes, partly because I had a solid team or so I thought. I thought maybe, my losing ways was because I lost my #1 catcher, who was a 1 with a -3 who was keeping runners at bay, as well as a solid hitter. I lost him for 10 games my two other catchers couldn't hold the plate warm till he got back. That said I had a slick fielding ss who was batting .230, so I replaced him with a iron glove, solid hitting ss. I did this towards the end of my losing streak. I went 1-5 with my new ss, no errors! I did face the two best teams in the league who I have never faired well against, I am facing a injury bug as of late, so maybe. I was leading the league in e.r.a. I see that has slipped a little as I am in second, but barely. So, in summary it's anybodys guess, judging from the comments above, huh?

Your new SS made no errors because he is too cement-footed to get to the ball. If the ball dribbles slowly into left field while your SS stands and watches, it is just a hit -- no error. The SS position is tough in this game. If I can't get one of the studs I prefer a cheap platoon costing under $2M total. Look at Schofield/Uribe for example.

If you are in a smallball park a shortstop at .625 OPS who is a 1 on defense is better than a shortstop at .800 OPS who is a 3 on defense. But of course there are other factors like the quality of the other fielders . . . .

Look at Ozzie on this team. Despite his crappy hitting I wouldn't dream of dropping him for a 3 defender. And the only 2 I would drop him for is Cal.

Your team could be good in Shea or Oakland but it will get creamed at Wrigley or Kingdome. Not sure where you are. I might try to upgrade from Joe Carter and Pena but otherwise you are fine. Pena has a good arm but you usually want more pop from the catcher position. Look at Hassey vs rhp and Dempsey vs lhp.
