Help with a semi-awful team

Help with a semi-awful team

Postby voovits » Fri Aug 14, 2009 1:33 am

This is my first dive into 2008, and you can tell by looking at my team, that I have a lot to learn about the set.
The autodraft went poorly, and in hindsight it was probably due to filling out the card poorly.
Waivers has already completed and I don't think I really improved. I sacrificed some of the little offense I had for lower injury guys.

I think my starting staff is decent at least.

I clearly built the team on pitching, defense and low injury guys, but the offense lacks way too much. I entered my entire team into the CDROM game to see the actual percentages of the players I have and the offense seems staggeringly poor.

Do I need to sacrifice Pujols to get more offense elsewhere? Did I spend too much on the bullpen? Is Fuentes a good closer (he was not my first choice)? Would I be able to actually save money if I tried a 5 man rotation? It looks like there are a lot of good non * pitchers out there.
The problem is, with all these questions, I wouldn't even know what kind of changes to make. No free agents look particularly appealing to me.

Can this team be saved or is it doomed?

Thanks for any advice.

My 2 shiny pennies...

It sounds like u know where you have gone wrong. You have way to much invested in your SP/RP for Dolphins. Dump Baek for $1 million. Maybe dump Grienke for Blanton or Wolf.

Fuentes is a fine closer. Keep Madson to setup. Downgrade Downs to Mahay. Grab a hard RH or 2 and a hard LH and quick hook them.

I'm also not too sure you have enough OB around Pujols to score enough.

Dump Sanchez for Burriss.

I like a 1 @ SS in pitching parks. I'd dump Cabrera for Wilson, if he's there. If not keep Cabrera.

These are just things off the top of my dome.

It looks like you already got the advice you need. But my 3 cents says, you have too much money tied up in your bullpen, and maybe your pitching staff in general. Halladay is GREAT but he can only go once every four days. Get some more hitters (OBP guys). I do not like Freddy Sanchez for this season. He does not walk or get on base enough. Pujols could be the league MVP, but he is SO PRICEY, I prefer to spread my money around and have a ,"LONG LINEUP", or in other words a lineup 1 thru 9 that can get on base, steal a base, or hit a HR. I like a lineup where everyone can either hit HRs, or steal bases. Guys like Freddy Sanchez can not do either. Good luck!

You are going to face rhp 70% of the time. You need some more hitting vs. rhp, and more obp generally. pretty good dee-fence.

The number one issue is Pujols and Halladay on the same team. They are both very good but expensive. To successfully have them on the same team would require some expertise with the set and autodraft accordingly to get the cheap, good players to support them. These players are probably gone now. I don't see your supporting cast being good enough to support those two enough to have a winning team.

I made a few changes. I downgraded the pitching (starters and relievers) some, and upgraded from Morgan to Span and from Sanchez to Carroll.
Is the team looking any better? I may not have upgraded enough on offense.
The free agent pool is surprisingly thin, I assume all 200x games are the same way.

If I have to part with Halladay or Pujols I will, but my first preference would be to try to work 'em both in there.
No sense is playing with them though if I have no chance of winning.

Thanks for all the advice.

I went ahead and got rid of Pence as well. I know he didn't hit well, I just wanted a good arm in RF. Upon reconsidering things, I'd be better with the offensive upgrade in Ordonez over Pence in right.

And you're right about Lugo, I didn't consider Cabrera wont get injured for more thqan the remainder of the game, and I certainly don't want Lugo playing LF, that would be a nightmare.

I may want to mention that this is a no-DH league. That's kind of important.

Endy Chavez is one of my favorite players, so that's why i picked him up. If I need the cash before the season starts I'll certainly get rid of him. He'll be a nice late game defensive replacement for Ordonez at least.

I wish strato berce was still up I would look at you FA wire. But I think you did well in the up grades.

Still might want more than Blake and Carroll in slugging.

Which 2B and 3B are on the wire? Or prehaps even LF to repalce Winn?

I REALLY like Span in this set, btw. good job in grabbing him.

right now ur lineup

1. Span
2. Winn
3. Pujols
4. McCann
5. Ordonez
6. Blake
7. Carroll
8. Cabrera
9. pitcher

i like 1-5, 6-8 not so much!
