Certain players more likely to get certain seasons?

I would add Gorman Thomas to the list of consistent under performers.

On the pitching side of things, at least for me, Orel Hershiser never puts up the numbers you would expect from him.
Though I have seen him dominate with other teams, never mine.

HAL assigns guys as "your guys"

I totally agree with Yountfan. I have felt this way from the beginning. Itruly believe that if you have certain players that have performed well for you in the past, you are more likely to get their good years. And vice versa. I never get Gary Carter's good cards. Yet, I have a core of about 3-4 players that I can usually count on some of the best.

Continuing the McReynolds count, through 15 seasons I have come across:

1985: 2 times (+1 - Dropped before injury reveal, but was awful)
1986: 2 times
1987: 2 times (+1)
1988: 3 times (+1)
1990: 6 times

I am only unsure of the 2 1985 seasons. Both times he was dropped with awful stats and no injury reveal.

Things are starting to even out. I'm not complaining as his 1990 season is not that good anyway.

voovits: You can add me to the list of players who had McReynolds' '88 card. I picked him up in desperation as a free agent after game 30 when Rice and Baines failed in LF. It was a $100 mil league, so options were slim and none at that point, but amazingly, no one had tabbed McReynolds. He did an AWESOME job for me and hit from the get go. In 447 AB over 109 games he batted .300 with 26 DOs, 3 TRs, 28 HRs and 84 RBI. He would have played more games for me, but he had a couple of injuries, including a 15 gamer, even though he had 600 OFFICIAL PAs (including 4 HBP and 6 sacrifices), but only 590 PAs for Strato injury purposes, which counts only ABs + BBs (as you know, a very sore subject with me that HBP and sacs are not included when calculating injury eligibility!)

He only hit .161 in the playoffs, but somehow managed to drive in 8 runs in 9 games as my team won the championship as the wild card team.

You can see the team, the Rip City Wreckers, at the following link:

With the way he played for me, I'll consider taking him again when I have another '80s team. - Bernie W

I've had McReynolds: 1x 86, 2x 87, and 1x 90. I can't believe the year selection is anything other than random using a computerized algorithm.

There IS hope...

I would always get Brett's worst card but thought I would give him another try in my current league. Finally hit on that .390 card and it truly is awesome. He his carrying the team literally on his back. After 108 games he's hitting at his card stats, .390 with 390 AB's, 35 doubles, 29 homers and 105 rbi in Tiger Stadium. He would be a Triple Crown Threat but he's about 8th on the homerun list. Now, if I can get Mark McGwire's '87, 49 homer card to start producing, I might be able to take my division....

I guess I can't say anything bad about George Brett anymore.

Now, Stieb is another story....

Wow, I can't believe I missed Bernies post about McReynolds the first time.

Glad to see we have another McReynolds believer in our midst. That ups the total to 2!
McReynolds is a fine producer all around if you hit his 86 or 88 cards. 87 will produce HRs just fine, but the AVG suffers greatly.
Statistically, his 90 card is pretty good against righties, but he rarely lives up to what is statistically expected.
Then there is the wonderful 85 card. I just started a league Monday, and when HAL set the lineups, he started Pat Sheridan in LF over McReynolds against the 2 right handed starters, and McReynolds in left, but batting 9th against the lefty. That equates to 85 in my mind and warranted an immediate drop, even though he went 2-4 in his 1 game.
Though THS is probably right, it is nice to speculate on what could be.
I've had the same kind of problem that sellingw (and I'm sure many others) have with Bretts card, but with Carew instead. I never once have tried to draft Brett, but I like Carew a lot, especially in the 70s game. I have yet to get Carews best card in several attempts in both games.
I know it's all about the luck, but you'd think the cards would fall your way at least once...
