24 team keeper

Postby Ninersphan » Thu Aug 20, 2009 3:59 pm

I think the biggest problem will be finding 24 dedicated memebers to join. I'm in 6 keeper leagues right now and of those 6 leauges of 12 teams, there are only 32 different participants.

Before anyone asks, while I'm interested, I simply can't commit to another league with the 6 I'm already in. I do know that a couple of the guys in the USKL have tossed around the idea,

They include

DetroitTigers
Kaviksdad
qksilver
superflymacdaddyjuice

so there's a couple of names for you to persue. I'd suggest some form of the USKL 3/GMKL/NAKL rules but ditch a snake draft, and posibly limit rosters to 30 or 32 players instead of 40. But as I said I can't make the commitment.

Possible Rules

Postby cshannajr » Thu Aug 20, 2009 10:21 pm

RULES

Initial Draft:
1) The initial draft is a 31 round live draft and will start the day after the draft order is established. Rounds 1 through 30 are for players; Round 31 is for the stadium.
2) Only those players who were issued SOM cards this year and appear on TSN"s website are eligible for the initial draft.
3) The initial draft is serpentine; all subsequent Free Agent drafts are non-serpentine based upon the previous season's regular season records. Draft picks are tradeable.

Prospect drafts:
1) There are 2 prospect drafts during each season (except the 1st season)
2) The first yearly prospect draft is 2 rounds, to be held immediately after the 2010 Spring Free Agent draft and each subsequent Spring Free Agent draft.
3) The second yearly prospect draft is 2 rounds, to be held immediately after each year's Supplemental Free Agent draft.
4) Only those players without MLB experience [b:b63893f4f7]signed[/b:b63893f4f7] by MLB teams and signed prior to the start of that MLB season, are eligible for any prospect draft.
5) All prospect drafts are non-serpentine, and draft order is based on the previous season's regular season records.
6) Owners lose rights to all prospects that they release; Released prospects are eligible to be drafted as either a) Free Agents if they were issued SOM cards or b) prospects again
if never issued SOM cards.
7) There is a 3 hour clock for Round 1 of each prospect draft. All subsequent rounds will operate with a 1 hour clock (proxies are encouraged).
8) Individual owners are responsible for their own prospect research.

Supplemental Free Agent drafts:
1) A Supplemental Free Agent draft of up to 2 rounds will be held between seasons 1 and 2 of each calender year.
2) All owners must announce their roster drops ( up to 2) prior to the Supplemental draft.
3) Owners may draft no more than 2 players; Owners are not required to draft any players during the Supplemental draft
4) Supplemental Free Agent drafts are non-sepentine; Supplemental Free Agent draft order is determined by the previous season's regular season record.
5) There is a 3 hour clock for Round 1 of the Supplemental Free Agent draft. All subsequent rounds will operate with a 1 hour clock.
6) The Supplemental Free Agent draft is only 3 rounds. Owners with less than a full roster may use the Supplemental Free Agent Draft to get back to a 35 man roster provided they can do it within 3 rounds. There will never be more than 48 picks made in the Supplemental draft.
7) [b:b63893f4f7]Supplemental picks may NOT be traded[/b:b63893f4f7].

Annual Spring Free Agent drafts:
1) A non-serpentine free agent draft of at least 10, and up to 15 rounds, will be held each year shortly after TSN/SOM cards are released. Draft order is determined by cumulative win/loss records. Worst to first, NFL style.
2) All owners must drop enough players to bring their rosters to a maximum of 25 players allowing for 10 draft picks; Owenrs can drop below 25 players, but must not have less than 20 prior to the draft.
3) Player drops must be announced prior to the beginning of the Free Agent draft.
4) All owners must have a full 35 man roster upon completion of the annual Spring Free Agent draft.
5) There is a 3 hour clock for Round 1 of each Annual Free Agent draft. All subsequent rounds will operate with a 1 hour clock (proxies...proxies...proxies).

General rules:
1) There will be one season played, this first year. However, there will be 2 seasons played each subsequent year. Season 1 will begin in after the Initial spring free agent draft - Season 2 will begin in the spring after the new cards are on the TSN SOM websitet.
2) Divisional assignments will change each season. The format is this: a) initial divisional assignments will be by draft order; Teams 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21 in the East, 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22 Central; 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23 in the Midwest and 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 West.
3) Divisional assignments for each season be determined by the final win/loss records of the previous season.
4) All transactions must be posted on the individual league thread.
5) The league Commish shall maintain a record of all drafts, transactions and player movements and provide a copy to any owner on request.
6) All ties between teams will be broken by the previous season's head to head win/loss records. If this does not break the tie, cumulative win/loss head to head records will be used.
7) You cannot trade draft choices that you do not own. This means that if you trade a 9th round draft pick, you must release as many players as necessary to insure that you will have a 9th round pick. For example, you have a 35 man roster, and you have acquired an extra 2nd, 3rd, and 6th round draft picks during the year. You have also traded away
a 7th and 9th round draft pick. This means you must release at least 12 players prior to the draft to insure that you will have a 9th round pick. If you plan to continue drafting beyond Round 9 you will have to release an additional player for each subsequent round. You cannot drop more than 15 players.
9) All rule changes must pass by a super majority - 8 owners or more.
10) There are no specific rules against "roster dumping." Owners no longer in a pennant race can use their best judgement in determining the makeup of their team, provided that all general roster size limits are met. However, it is expected that all owners will act in the best interests of the game.
11) All leagues will be set up using no-DH (after reviewing the comments so far, and looking into this a little...I think no DH would work best. This is NOT set in stone however. If most of you would like the DH that is certainly flexible, along with most of these rules).

Stadium rules:
1) Each player will draft a stadium during Round 31 of the Initial Free Agent draft.
2) Stadium draft order will be the reverse of Round 1 of the Initial Free Agent draft.
3) Stadiums are unique and belong to each owner for the duration of the league. There will be no annual or seasonal draft of new stadiums, so choose your stadium wisely.
4) Stadiums can only be changed through trade. Players may trade stadiums with other players at any time except while a regular season is in progress.

Roster rules:
1) Each team must carry no more than a 35 man roster (starting in the spring of 2010. You will have 30 in the initial season. In the event a transaction sends an owner's roster above the 35 man limit, said owner is allowed 1 day to release as many players as necessary to get back to the 35 man limit. However if an owner has less than 35 players due to uneven trades, the owner cannot bring his roster to the full 40 until a Free agnet draft, whether spring or supplemental. ( See Player Movement)
2) Each team must carry a 25 man league roster during each season.
3) Each may carry up to a 10 man minor league roster during each season.
4) Each team may add an additional 3 players (to a maximum of 28 players) to their MLB roster once game 132 has been played.
5) There are no limits to tranactions between an owner's major and minor league rosters except those internal to the SOM game engine.
6) Injured players can be kept on a team's major league roster for the duration of their injury. Players promoted to the major league roster as injury replacements must be returned to the minor league roster once the injury has healed. There is a 2-game grace period to return injury replacement players to the minor league roster - this allows each
owner to maintain a constant 25 man roster at all times. We will be using the honor system here - please don't keep players beyond their authorized time!
7) Each team is set up with a $200 million dollar roster; all roster transactions will use the 10% Free Agent penalty.
8) The minimum roster size is 28 players. The only exceptions are during the supplemental and free agent draft periods.
9) All teams must meet SOM roster requirements at all times.

Prospect Player rules:
1) The maximum number of prospects allowed on each roster is 10.
2) Prospects are not counted as part of the 35 man roster while they maintain their prospect status.
3) Owners control the rights of their prospects for an indefinite period but your team may never have more than 10 prospects at a time.
4) Prospects can be traded.
5) Prospects can be promoted to the major league roster at any time, provided there is roster space available. Once promoted all prospects lose their prospect status, and cannot be demoted back to prospect status.

Player movement:
1) Trading players is authorized and encouraged. The trading of draft picks is also authorized. Unbalanced trades are authorized provided that the 35 man roster limit is maintained at all times; in the event of an unbalanced trade the owner of the team whose roster exceeds the 35 man limit is allowed 1 day to release player(s) to get back to the 35 man limit.
2) There will be no pickups of unowned free agent players except through the Annual and Supplemental Free Agent drafts.
3) Prospects can be activated and promoted to the major league roster during the regular season provided there is roster space available to do so. Players with a full 35 man roster cannot promote a prospect until there is room available to do so.
4) Regular players on the 35 man roster cannot be released in order to promote a prospect while a season is in progress.
5) Regular players can be released from the 35 man roster only for the following: a) pre-draft release prior to Annual Free Agent draft; b) pre-draft release prior to Supplemental free agent draft; c) to bring a roster down to the 35 man limit as a result of an unbalanced transaction

Let me know what you all think. I'm certainly interested in any other ideas and what the majority think about DH or no DH. I will post a sign up with these rules to get a better idea of what kind of interest we have.
Thanks,
Chuck

i totally appreciate your energy put into making this happen. I think the basic concept works well, but there are a number of rules I don't think will work well.
I don't think it s a good idea to ever go up to 35 on a player limit, that's means we will have almost every player who has a card chosen. Onr thing that means is that if someone initially has a bad draft, it make sit very hard to ever recover. There is little mobility. This is even more true because of the high propect draft pick in later years, Drafting four draft picks a year in a 24 team league, is 2.67 times more prospects than we pick in a 12 team league with 3 picks, again, it will bea glacial process for a losing team to ever catch up, which I think will lead to people dropping. I think it is important to leave enough players undrafted, that a low end team has some talent to pull from in the drafts. I felt OK about a 35 minute limit IF prospects are included in that limit. I also felt OK about a 30 player limit and one 2 round prospect draft.

I also really think we need an NBA style weighted lottery for the top draft picks, in subsequent drafts. If we do not do this, it will be good strategy for the worst teams to lose as many games as possible to get the number 1 or 2 pick in the drafts, and I think that cheapens the league, and can affect the standings for the better teams depending how many "committed losers" they face. This is the situation that bothers me most.

Here is a process that we made part of the rules for my current keeper league. I already have come up with a version to use for a 24 team league, which I can show you if I like.

1) The first 3 choices of the first round of each draft will not be decided purely by reverse order of finish, but by an NBA style weighted lottery of all non-playoff teams. Before each draft, regular, supplemental, and prospect
(except for the initial draft)We will check the pick 3's on 5 states, Arizona, California, Wisconsin, New York, and Ohio, in that order. The Arizona numbers will determine the first draft choice by checking the last two
numbers in the pick 3.
00-01 5th place team
02-04 6th place team
05-09 7th place team
10-16 8th place team
17-26 9th place team
27-41 10h place team
42-65 11th place team
66-99 12th place team

California will determine the 2nd draft choice, unless the same team is chosen to draft as was in Arizona, you keep going down the order of states until 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks have been assigned. The rest of the first round
(and all subsequent rounds) simply go in reverse order of finish.) if by the end of the 5 states. all 3 picks have not been assigned then we just go in reverse order of finish for the picks that are left.

I have already stated my preference for a DH league.

I like the idea of an NBA style draft order at the beginning of each season. Unfortunately, maybe I'm a little slow or maybe I don't understand the pick 3's all that much, but I don't grasp how your version of how that would work. Like I said I like your NBA style draft idea though using the pick 3's as you have suggested.

I don't have a problem dropping the roster size to a max of 30 (less work for the commish). We could do something like this: initial draft of 30. Before the spring draft each team must drop the required number of players to make the roster size 25, up to a min roster size of 20.

We could also have just one prospect draft of 2 players, which would be in the spring right after the spring free agent draft. There would be no summer prospect draft.

As far as the DH...I guess that's still up in the air. Like I said, I would prefer no DH, but I am certainly flexible on that issue (like most of the rest of the issues). One thing I like about the DH is that it give HAL less involvement in the outcome of games.

Thoughts...comments????

I could go either way on DH/No-DH, although I'd still prefer no-DH.

Re: litangel's concern that sloppy 1B or 3B guys won't get picked (typical DH stars in DH leagues), take a look at the Florida card set for 2008. They won 84 games with:

Jacobs, 1b-5e17
Uggla, 2b-4e15
Ramirez, ss-3e24
Cantu, 3b-4e27

We tend to focus on better range and fewer errors in 12-team leagues, but adventures in fielding are a natural part of the game.

I would agree...the Phillies won the World Series with Pat Burrell is LF  Plus, it would make for an interesting draft...take the bat or take the fielder????

I"ll jump in. And since all the keepers I'm use the DH, I'm kind of interested in a non-DH keeper. Without actually seeing the numbers, my guess it would increase the quality of picks. As to the rest of the rules, it looks like we have a couple of sets on the thread that we could work with.

I couldn't run the league given my current commitments, but would be able to assist in an assistant commish/record keeper role.

I made an error in the rules. In section 6 of the Supplemental Draft section, it should read 2 rounds...not 3. Thanks for pointing that out KD.

6) The Supplemental Free Agent draft is only [b:5c5139f79b]2 rounds[/b:5c5139f79b]. Owners with less than a full roster may use the Supplemental Free Agent Draft to get back to a 35 man roster provided they can do it within [b:5c5139f79b]2 rounds[/b:5c5139f79b]. There will never be more than 48 picks made in the Supplemental draft
