Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

[quote:78e7fda277]I for one like and would like to see even more of the best vs worst gap in selecting cards of players. I like Moragn having a .237BA card to go with 75 and 76 as options.[/quote:78e7fda277]

I think for the high pricied player should have more consistent years. People just dump the bad year because it it so bad for the price (aka Brett in the 80's). In fact, I'll take to farther and say all the cards for a player should be closer to each other. Becuase some players have one or two good cards that is all that gets used. Give me year closer together, but with different strenght and weakness, all usable for the money. When I look at my stats database you can see lower priced players with all there AB's or IPs distributed amoung two seasons. People are good a figuring out the cards. Why can't a 3m player have all 3m cards vs a 6m card, 4m card, 3m cared and 2 1m cards?

I don't mind so much having a bad season or two among the mystery cards. What bothers me about the season distribution on the cards is the randomness of why some players have 5 good seasons as part of the mystery card and others have less with no rhyme or reason for such. For example, Joe Morgan has one bad season included among his mystery cards. Yet, Bench and Stargell, two similar caliber stars from the same era, who also had a down year where they hit in the .230s, have no bad years included among the mystery cards. On the low end, Rich Auerbach has a year where he hit .327 among his mystery cards, whereas Bill Stein, who hit .330 & .310 in a couple of years with Texas and had far more plate appearances than Auerbach in the .327 year and was a much better hitter, has nothing above .270 among his mystery cards. I could go on ad nauseum with similar examples (I will only add that I think Billy Williams, Boog Powell and John Mayberry, three of the most feared hitters of their era, were shorted at least one good season each.).

The fact of the matter is that everyone wants access to the best cards. One fair way to resolve the situation is to give HOFers or near HOFers 4 very good years and then one year most reflective of his lifetime numbers instead of a terrible year as in the cases of Morgan, Jackson, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Schmidt, Gaylord Perry, Sutton, Niekro, Gibson, Jenkins, Carlton, etc. The same formula could be used for lesser players, except they could get two or more seasons reflective of their lifetime numbers, depending on their playing performance. That way the stars would remain stars, would not be given a bad year as a result of decrease in abilities with age, and just like real baseball, a lesser player would occasionally have a better year than a star.

I hope this thread stays up for a while, as I've got a few other ideas for improving the game but haven't had time to put them on paper.

May the Strato gods be with you. - Bernie W

Though I can't say I disagree, I also don't completely agree either. Though it would be nice to see some improvements in some players, one thing I don't want is to turn the mystery card games into an ATG game.
There still needs to be a fair share of lousy seasons for the players as well (every player needing at least 1 IMO).

Also keep in mind that all players seasons are reflected into the cost of the player, so guys with 0 or 1 bad seasons are generally more expensive than guys with 2 or 3 bad seasons and so on. Changes/improvements to players will up the price, leaving possibly too few cheap players if too many of them are improved. It's important to maintain a price balance as well.

I'm all for some minor tweaks in both the 70s and 80s game, but nothing drastic, and for every improvement to a player, it may be wise to make a downgrade to someone else.

Voovits, your points are well taken. If I'm reading the views in the thread correctly, it seems many people are hoping for more fair and equitable pricing anyway. Guys like Powell, Mayberry & Robertson, with only 1 or 2 good seasons, are considered by many to be overpriced. There is also a big price disparity between the '70s and '80s in the price of relief pitchers, with far more bargains in the '80s, although many remain overpriced there as well. I think most people consider players like Morgan, Otis and Willie Davis to be overpriced as well. There are many examples of such. Also, if a HOFer was given 4 good seasons, and then a season more reflective of his lifetime numbers, I think many people would consider that to be his down season, as it is not unusual for a HOFer (or any player for that matter) to hang on once skills begin to decline and for such to have a negative impact on their career numbers. I don't think it would be akin to playing ATG, as with that league you know in advance what you are getting and in the mystery card league, even if all the seasons were decent, there are still differences.

While I prefer HOFers and near HOFers to have good seasons used, I wouldn't mind a bad year being included as one of the mystery card years so long as everybody gets one. That's my beef, that players such as Stargell and Bench have none of their bad years included among the mystery cards while other players like Morgan and Jackson have a bad year included, with no rhyme or reason. If bad years are going to be part of the mix, let's do it equally across the board and give at least one to everybody (although I still think HOFers or near HOFers should be given a pass, after all, that's why they are HOFers, more good years and fewer bad years).

I do agree that online Strato is the best online baseball game around, but there's always room for improvement and it's nice to know that we are being given this opportunity to have input on the future of the game. - Bernie W

In case anyone reading this is interested, I complained in the ATG forum about the questions/issues/suggestions having spam that went undeleted for half a month and this is part of his response:

[quote:97b9d6971f="bernieh"]That particular forum turned out to be a failure, and I gave up on checking on it a long time ago. I've been paying more attention to this more main forum instead, and focusing an extensive amount of effort towards servicing inquiries that go to our Member Services inbox.[/quote:97b9d6971f]

That paragraph led me to the realization that this thread has not and will not ever get looked at by anyone and probably should have been started in the main or ATG forums.

I agree with voovits. It would be fun to see the dropped cards at the end of the season, so i can see how stupid i was.

I think combining the card sets would be a great idea, and probably an easy one to accomplish. I was considering buying an ATG IV game the other day simply because there are sooo many more players to choose from. The 80s game is (has) gotten old because you use the same limited player pool over and over. Combining the card sets would solve that problem and re-ignite interest in the game.

I am not for combining because that would make the player pool way too large which is the main reason I rarely play ATG. It would lead to endless drop/adds. Keep them seperate but equal. The 80's game just needs a facelift and a bump up in the player pool to about the size of the 70's game.
