Hidden Gems - 2008 Style

Hidden Gems - 2008 Style

Postby pwhitsel » Fri Sep 04, 2009 12:31 pm

I've seen discussions before about hidden gems or cheap (<$1 million) players that really work out well in various card sets, but I haven't seen that discussion about the 2008 card set. So, I'm curious, who belongs on your all-bargain team for the 2008 set?

In my limited experience I'd have to say that Kameron Loe and Shawn Camp qualify as RP's. Both have good ERA and WHIP for me at Coors, which defies logic. Ryan Freel has been on base nearly 40% of the time in his 50 at-bats. It's a small sample size but that is my 2 cents.

Almazega-versatilty at two tough positions, speed and seems to out hit his decent card.
Keppinger-I have platooned him at SS, 2B & 3B. Nice card vs lhp's. Can be very good.
LRod-another versatile, good platoon player. Hit .362(.342 overall) vs rhp's on my Tour $60 team.
R Cancel-Pretty good C platoon. Bad "D", but only vs lhp's keeps the errors down.
Aybar-"2" rated SS under $1.00 who can hit a little.
VMart-nice C platoon and can play 1B in a pinch. Has had more than one big platoon season for me(90+ RBI combined).
Endy Chavez-great "D" and can hit a little. Nice with injury prone OF's.
Adam Kennedy-.280/"1" injury and Ok "D" for .73. Starting and hitting .290 in a theme league for me.
Figgins-I have won a title with him at 3B, but seems like he should do better.
Shouse-The Keppingger/VMart of the RP's-almost always good.
Burton-worth two or three times his price

Bass has worked for me as a spot starter, as has Colon, but you got to be facing the right team in the right park.

Lugo > .400 OBA platooning as DH/LF and once in a while SS vs. LH pitching.

Waechter has pitched well for me twice, ERA under 3.00, in two leagues, but got rocked in a third.

I agree with Dmitri Young - this guy jist keeps on hitting. Paul La duca has surprised me with hitting also. I wonder about Juan Piere - he is always on my draft list - but someone else alsways snags him before he gets t ome

I have used Juan Pierre multiple times. He is a great value and steals a ton of bases. I had him steal over 80 one season.
