I am not sure why we are restricting ourselves to rookies only. Doesn't it make sense to allow free agents to be drafted now, rather than leaving it to AutoDraft? I mean isn't that the whole point of ranking the draft from weakest team to strongest? I am pretty sure (though not certain since I am 45 and my memory waxes and wanes) that in the past we have drafted free agents in the pre-season in addition to rookies. I propose opening up the draft to include free agents after this round 1 is done.

Doc, I had approached the question of FA's in the draft with the Commish's office before last season. To me it makes sense as well. Fred's response on that was acceptable to me as Commish's word. If it ever became a ballot question, however, I'd support. Whichever way Fred wants to address it, or not at all for that matter, to me remains up to Fred.

I understand the views, but the point of the annual draft is for the teams to have a chance to pick up the amateur talent (much like the draft in the MLB). As for the free agents at the end of the year, aside from the fact that it is hard to keep track of who is available, the point is that those who were free agents at the end of the season now are open up to all on an equal basis. For the record, I've never missed out on a free agent I went after in the autodraft.
