Wow a really nice team. Really nice. How'd you get all those hitters? You pitching is good also. My only comment is I'm not sure Pucket can hit 4th. Cooper may make a better fit, but as with all things 80's it is in the cards.
Also be paient with your hitters, you have guys you mostly never drop. Let the pichers pitch and see where it all fall. My guess is the play-offs

Not too bad for a first go around in the 80's format. Hope you enjoy it.
Your divisional rivals have conspired against you playing in such powerful parks. My only fear is that your pitching staff is somewhat weak. Ruess is one of the better lefties in the game but he's really not an ace in my opinion. Niekro and Petry are 2nd tier starters in my opinion also.
For my money, I'd rather have Gullickson than Petry for only .6 more. I'm not a real big fan of Niekro since you're really gambling on 1 of 2 cards there. Is L. Hoyt still available? I can understand Langford from a financial constraint. One starter that you can probably get as much mileage from in the #4 spot as Langford is L. Leal. And he's much cheaper.
Maybe it'd be good to know who is left on the wire? Are you still pre-waivers?
Bullpen looks ok. Kern's best card makes him a good risk at 2 million and he's also easy to let go of when he's in an off year. Howe is excellent but you'll never get that kind of mileage out of his 83 card. His best card is his 82 card by far. But he's a very, very succesful Lefty Setup Guy on a short leash.
Leach is ok. Anderson is like many of the other .75 but I would lose R. Davis especially since you'll be playing in homer parks around your division. I'd roll the dice on R. Camp for the same money. He's got 2 very good cards and he's also very easy to let go of when he doesn't pan out.
The only reason I'm focusing on your pitching is because I think that is what is going to set you apart from your divisional mates in order to be successful. While your lineup is good, you'll be chasing your divisional mates in slugging the whole way. You'll need to find a way to offset the offensive juggernauts.
I'd get a better DH against LH pitching also. P. Incaviglia might be available and he'd be something you could afford right now. I'm not saying get rid of R. Jackson. He might come in handy considering what you're likely to see with Cooper's splits.
Just some thoughts.

I agree with bjs comments about your pitching. I would even consider adding another RP. The parks you will be playing in could burn through your pen quickly.

On the pitching: With starting pitching it's really ALL in the cards. Not too many managers survive a season with their original 4 man staff intact. It's happened to me once in 16 seasons. So be prepared to think on your feet. I really like Reuss, but I would upgrade on or two of the other starters if possible.
Don't let it get around, but Leach has been a bullpen ace for me on several occasions, though it varies from year to year. If I were going to drop a reliever to get more cash for SPs, it would be Kern. If you compare their cards, Leach is better than Kern virtually year for year and costs less than half as much.
Just my two cents.... :wink:

Very impressive 1st team. Most would die for the hitters you have. My self included. Your pitching looks good. Me thinks you are play-off bound. I would be paitent with your bats. Give 'em a good 20 - 25 games or so. I have found from personal mistakes of my own and others have jumped the gun on dropping after only a couple of series. I have picked up some guys that got me to the play-offs that were thrown out by others. I checked their park and division against what they produced and found they had not lived up to the actual year because of ball park effects. My last great find was when someone dumped the Straw-man. I am now in the play-offs in large because of his bat and my division and park. Just some thoughts.

Like everyone said the offense is loaded. Unless you have very bad luck your team will hit with the others in your division. By the way it looks like you are in a very potent division. You have a lot of guys with at least 4 pretty good cards for your stadium so patience is key for those guys. You have picked some nice reserves as well ... I really like the upside of guys like Bailor, Meyer, Royster. I think Newman stinks however and would rather see you take a gamble on a guy like Fitzgerald, Bando or an iron glove like Salas. I also like your defense ... and you're going to need it because ...
Your pitching is likely to fail. Reuss has a lot of cards that look great but in my experience he fails about half the time (maybe a little less). His best card is great and he is a decent fit for your park but as with most pitchers he is a bit of a crap shoot. Niekro is a decent mid-to-bottom rotation gamble but he is no better than 50% to succeed. Forsch is even worse and has little chance to be an ace. I have never played with Langford but have seen him do well... and I think I like him better than Forsch. This is not to say that all of these guys will fail you but I think there is a strong chance you will wind up with only one or two keepers out of the bunch. If you had 6 of these types on your team I would say you would be lucky to find 3 keepers.
I think Kern is a waste of money personally. If you get his great card you are set otherwise you can get equal performance for .75. If it was me I would cash him in for 1 or 2 cheap alternatives who have an equal chance to be decent... Power, Guetterman, Gleaton, Garber, Nelson, Caudill even Odell Jones come to mind.
I think there is a chance you are going to find yourself in an awkward position (one that I have found myself in) where your pitchers are going to get lit up but you are not going to have enough cash to buy the alternate pitchers you would like to have - as it will be unclear which of your position players are duds.
As always, if you get lucky with the cards all of this is moot.

Thanks for all the input guys. Still getting a feel for the cards and trying to figure out good fits for my park and divisional rivals. My brain is now fried. :lol:
