How does HAL pick the starting pitcher from your rotation???

Here's my thought process ... I will set my rotation as follows Lanier, Young, Dineen and leave the 4th and 5th spots empty. As I understand it, HAL will automatically select the next most expensive starting pitcher who is eligible to pitch for the next game.

I don't think the price tag is the issue. This is based on what people have told me when they leave their lineups empty. Hal doesn't always pick the most expensive players to play. I suspect he will look for the best matchup but I am sure there are other variables as well.

All I can say is--don't leave your spots open unless you want to be scratching your head in the morning wondering why Hal started Jack Al Nipper when you had perfectly good Kid Speer ready to go.

I'm not sure either, but I can almost guarantee that price does not enter into it; the SOM engine does not know anything about TSN salary. However, I suspect that HAL will choose the 'best' pitcher, by ranking them in the same way that SOM uses when drafting players via their own engine. So it probably comes out pretty much the same as just using salary.

I know that when I have neglected to set my rotation at the beginning of the season, HAL always chooses the 'best' (in terms of salary) pitchers to go, even if I have several potential starters.

Another factor that plays into Hal's choice is the rest factor, the most rested SP or SP/RP pitcher that has been inactive has a real good chance of being chosen regardless of salary.

I just got another taste of HALs lineup creativity the other night. Rod Carew got hurt and HAL totally redid my lineup without calling me to consult first! McGwire starting at 3B, while Brett moves over to 1B, with Sweet Lou Whitaker, hitting .200 being moved up from 9th to 6th.

Insanity. Madness. It has a name...HAL!
