Small ball 101

Very interesting team - the most amazing thing I see is J.P. Howell, 18-7 with 11 saves and 18 blown saves. I had Howell and Street on a team with Street as the closer also and I tried to find a way to get Howell used more (as the go to guy) and he didn't pitch nearly as much as I wanted him to. Looks like you had your set up in a way that made him your main reliever. I'd be curious to know the set up for my future use.

Common thread among many of the real good 2008 teams have been guys like Sandovol, Ellsbury, Shields, and supersub Alfredo Amezaga. You got an amazing season out of Keppinger for real cheap as well. 831 runs with only 120 dingers is pretty awesome as well, but you had a real good team OBP with lots of speed and a good team BA which really made up for lack of homers. Five guys with over 40 doubles is pretty impressive too.

Must have been a fun team to watch. Great job, even if you got swept in the playoffs. Happens to all of us. :(

Thanks guys! As far as my usage for J.P. Howell, I had him as the set up guy with slow hook and aggressive bullpen. Peavy I had on slow hook.

Wow! You were 19-5 against the Sugarkings in head to head competition.

Congrats to this excellent team.

This team is actually loaded of good values for low-hitting ballparks. Peavy is one of the best value, Wellmeyer, Sandoval at first makes total sense, Ellsbury, Choo as dh, Barrett at dh (although he would be even better as a platoon with Izturis).

But I think the two key players are Markakis and Mauer. The 17M you spent on these two players is probably the best 17M you can spend on two position players for a low hitting ballpark. But the bigger advantage is that it then frees the owner to spend on the real good cheapy bargains. Holliday and Roberts also plays in this logic, but their values, dollar for dollar, appear to me less profitable than Markakis and Mauer.

Also, I am becoming more and more convinced that the logic of going witha staff full of right-handed SP+ lefty set-up man (set to come early) + right-handed closer is perhaps the best bullpen structure you can have. I never tried it, but I've seen that logic successful in too many teams to not notice it. Particularly if you happen to draft Kuo and Rivera.

I am tyring the same bullpen strategy. It seems like it works, but, opposing managers aren't doing a lot of match-up pinch hitting for me to get the most of this strategy.

Other than Shields, my other starters are set to no longer than 6 innings.

I pretty much used that strategy, with the exception of Bedard, and won alot of games with this small ball team, but as luck would have it I was swept out of the playoffs.
