Is this a result of a special play?

Postby 1st Command Commando » Thu Oct 22, 2009 9:35 am

Since my move back from the UK to the US, I have not unpacked my hard copies of the Strat games I own, so don't have immediate access to the crazy or special plays that can occur every now and again. I got a result last night I have never seen before. I'm guessing Murph hit a Sac Fly, but Fernandez left early? Thanks in advance.

0 K.Mitchell 6 1 Base Error - 2B b-1
0 1 T.Fernandez 4 Single 1-3 b-1
0 1 3 L.Dykstra 4 Walk 1-2 b-1
0 123 W.Randolph 7 Sac Fly 3-H b-0
1 12 W.Clark 6 Single 2-3 1-2 b-1
1 123 D.Murphy 3 Out On Appeal Double Play 3-o b-0

Tim McCleland must have been umping third base.

It's one of those strange plays on flyball X results.
What you said is exactly what happened.

The truth of the matter is that HAL was umpiring third base and whatever he's in the mood to see happen, is what happens.

I couldn't pass that up after the two blown calls by McCleland the other night. On the appeal play, he never looked at third base at all. How can a guy make that call. On the run down play he must have been totally blind. The play happened right in front of him and it was obvious Cano was not on the base when he was tagged.

He was watching whether or not the ball was caught on that one play... another reason to just implement instant replay on calls like that... working in the stoneage when we dont have to be.

Perhaps instant replay is OK for the playoffs. Instant replay during the regular season will further bog down the time length of a game.

I heard today that they were changing the umpire crew for the World Series and removing rookies. Joe West returns. MLB is pissed about the blown calls.

i disagree that it has to eat too much time and either way losing a little time is nothing compared to having a legit game. it takes about a second to determine alot of these calls, and that can be done with a 7th ump watching video, not stopping everything like in football challenges... there are many other ways to speed up the game... like pitchers actually pitching the damn ball within a reasonable amount of time... either way, on all of these calls coaches come out to argue or for explanations, which is all time that could be spent getting the call right, which should be the priority of any competetive game, not secondary to making a 3 hour game 5 minutes shorter... it's not like any instant replay is needed very often, alot of times not once in a game.
