One sided? Now I have heard everything! In a salary-capped league, two things have value: players and room under the salary cap (which can be used to get players). So what if you got $18 million worth of players for $15 million. The other manager can go right to the free agent market to make up the difference.
Instead of the trade, you could have gone to the free agent market and picked up $3 million in new players or used it to upgrade another player. Is that unfair? Of course not.
I once made a trade to someone after the season started where I gave a high-value player for a scrub and I think I got the best of the deal because I avoided most of the 20 percent penalty to pick up a free agent I wanted. Bottom line is cap room in an $80 million league has value.
