Re: Prospect

[quote:df365b43e2="PracticalDoc"]What do you mean by "does not appear on TSN's website." You mean the strato part right, not the whole website. This seems like common sense but the wording is giving me angina.

So for example, Carpenter is a Prospect but Stephen Strasburg is not?[/quote:df365b43e2]

There are cards issued by SOM for players who are not included online. TSN eliminates some of them, for a variety of reasons.

For the current set (2008 season's data), there are 499 hitters and 425 pitchers on the TSN/SOM site. These 924 players are not eligible for the prospect draft.

Any player is eligible as a prospect who is a) under contract to an MLB team when we start the prospect draft and b) not included in the 924 players referenced above.

Carpenter, for example, is eligible since he did not have a card in the 2008 data set.

Strasburg is also eligible now, since he has signed with an MLB team.

The next hotshot to follow Strasburg into the spotlight -- but who has not signed yet -- is not eligible.

My pick of Jose Vidro is a stand in for David Ortiz, DH Boston

T Cochran:

From the war room....how do I draft someone like Jim Thome? Shouldn't he be in the 2008 card set?

He is -- you need to do what I did: find the lousiest player in the set and pick him, then make an announcement here on the thread that that player is a stand-in for the DH you want.

Unfortunately this draft site doesn't allow you to draft anyone without a position.

DH

Whoa that was a surprise. So you're saying the players available on the somdraft site is an incomplete list? I totally missed that. Okay so who else is missing from that site?

As shown on the bottom of the Excel sheet downloaded from the SOM/TSN site, there are 6 DH-only players who are not listed on the draft site. For some reason, the site only lists players who have a position on their cards. DH-only guys are:
D. Ortiz
J. Thome
C. Floyd
F. Thomas
T. Hafner
R. Ruiz

The only players missing from the draft site are those designated hitters:

David Ortiz
Jim Thome
Travis Hafner
Dmitri Young

There might be a couple other DH rated players as well -

Was in line for 5+ hours to get the H1N1 flu shot and just got home. No proxies left, so I will make my picks soon.

What happens if we select a player that has a 2008 card, but they don't end up having a 2009 card? Are we able to keep them because we think they will have a card in 2010? Do we lose them when we start playing in 2009?

For instance, I picked Edinson Volquez who was injured most of 2009. He has a 2008 card. What if he doesn't end up with one for 2009? How does that affect him being on my roster?
