morning guys.

I've set abunch of proxies, but as it winds down i wouldn't be surprised if were all looking at the same remainging folks.

I won't be able to check up agina today until around 2am EST.

If i'm the one hanging the draft, don't feel like you need to wait for me to move past the pick. At this point i'd be surprised if anyone i pick is making my 25 man roster.

I can catch up picks late tonight or in the morning.

[quote:5267dead61="joekendall"]What happens if we select a player that has a 2008 card, but they don't end up having a 2009 card? Are we able to keep them because we think they will have a card in 2010? Do we lose them when we start playing in 2009?

For instance, I picked Edinson Volquez who was injured most of 2009. He has a 2008 card. What if he doesn't end up with one for 2009? How does that affect him being on my roster?[/quote:5267dead61]

Only players with SOM cards and listings in the TSN/SOM site are eligible to be on the 40-man rosters. Per the Annual Free Agent Draft rules:
a) "Only those players who were issued SOM cards for the current season and appear on the TSN website are eligible for the draft"; and
b) "All owners must have a full 40 man roster upon completion of the annual draft."

In any case, you may only carry a maximum of 30 players into the annual free agent draft -- and it would be surprising if a possible returnee from injury status would be of greater value than 25% of your roster.

But we do keep the rights to those players we selected that might not get a card the following year, right? The "only players with cards" rule applies to the drafting of NEW players, not the keeping of old players, correct?

If we can't keep those players that aren't issued cards, like Volquez for example, then that really changes things. I had assumed this was like the rest of the keepers I'm in. It would really reduce my level of interest if I was only allowed to keep carded players and not count on keeping the rights to prospects that will help me in the future.

That would be my understanding to based on the rules tcochran posted. If the player is already drafted from the previous year and the owner wants to keep him, he is not an eligible free agent. Therefore, I would think he could stay on the 40 man roster even though he doesn't have a card for the current year. If he was released without having a card, I would then think he couldn't be drafted in the free agent draft.

Been in meetings all day, sorry for my slow response.

You guys raise an interesting point -- and one I've never seen explicitly covered in the rules for any league!

It's clear that a player needs a card to be eligible for a draft THE FIRST TIME.

It's also clear that prosprects do not have cards, etc.

But having once been drafted and then later not have a card? Not covered.

I'd be happy to go along with your suggestions here, unless someone wants to offer something different for us to discuss?

Out of all of the keepers I'm in, not a one forces you to release players that do not get cards if you've already got them on the roster.

Some will alllow you to draft non-carded players in the spring free agent draft and some don't - most allow you to draft non-carded players but I don't have a problem with making only carded players eligible for the spring free agent draft.

I do not want to have to release non-carded players except by my choice, regardless of the timing.

[quote="kaviksdad"]The only players missing from the draft site are those designated hitters:

David Ortiz
Jim Thome
Travis Hafner
Dmitri Young

There might be a couple other DH rated players as well -[/quote

I think I did this right but my last pick is just a substitute for Jim Thome. Does that work?

Works for me -- Delwyn Young is actually Jim Thome.

Pick #434 was made in the name of Jamie Walker -- but that was used as a stand-in to actually pick poor ol' D.J. Carrasco, who did not receive much love earlier in this draft.

I agree with Kaviksdad.

Once drafted, I htink you should be able to keep a player until you choose to release them.

If we want to stick with the "You have to have a 40 carded players" rule, perhaps you could be allowed move a player without a card to be one of your 4 prospect that year?

just a thought.
