Hack Wilson. To play CF, or DH?

Hack Wilson. To play CF, or DH?

Postby modmark46 » Thu Mar 16, 2006 7:02 am

Before you answer, here's the situtation It's a theme league, so no FAs available to me. Just the 29 Cubs and 34 Cards for position players. I am playing in Fenway 67. NOW, I can have Hack playing CF, with Medwick as my DH, OR Hack as my DH with Johnny Moore playing in CF. I get Moore's better D in CF (CF 2, -2, e 11), but I also get his significantly weaker bat, in comparison to Medwick. My concern about Hack in CF, at least in MY park, is that his defense will cost my pitchers dearly, beyond the shellacking they will already take playing in Fenway 67. So the question, go for the better CF D and weaker bat, or max out my offense with Medwick as my DH (w/ Moore being relegated to late inning defensive replacement for Hack)?
If it matters, here are my position players:
C - S. Davis & B. Delancey platoon
1b- R. Collins
2b - R. Hornsby
SS - L. Durocher & W. English platoon
3b - P. Martin & F. Frisch platoon
LF - R. Stephenson
CF - H. Wilson (or J. Moore)
RF - K. Cuyler
DH - D. Medwick (or H. Wilson if Moore is in CF)

Do you have any cash restrictions? If you can afford to keep both Medwick and Moore, DH Medwick vs. lefties (Wilson in CF with Moore as the defensive sub) and play Moore in CF (Wilson becomes the DH) vs. right-hand pitching. You would be limiting your defensive exposure by playing Wilson in CF for perhaps 7 innings (when you have the lead and only in about 30% of the games).

Mark , I been using Hack lately and his D isn't all as bad as you'd think .On 2 teams finishing up tomorrow he has 11 and 9 errors but his stick is huge . You wouldn't sit Meusel because he make 20 e's . Put Hack of in the field ! Go with it . You won't be that upset at the end of the yr.

It's not the errors that kill you.
It's the x-chart hits he gives up vs a 1.

Rjoh's point is the basis of my concern, not the errors. If Hack allows 2-4 extra hits off of the fielding chart, in Fenway 67, that could be huge. But since I don't have a 1 in CF (Moore is a 2), I wonder what the overall difference in impact would be?

I love Hack, but a 3 in CF is not a good idea. This is a lesson learned the hard way. The problem is you never know just how much it hurts as the hist just show up the the box score.

Take Moore.

i agree. take moore and dh hack

i don't you'll be gaining that much with having medwick.

if you can afford it, have all of them. and play hack and
medwick in fenway 67, etc...

Again, to offer a different perspective, Hack will surrender only 13.5 more hits than Moore. Equated into obp terms, that's roughly .019 over the course of a season. Hack's offense will more than make up that gap (as would Medwick vs. Moore). Plus, you want to max out your bp HRs at Fenway. So, if cash is not a problem, Wilson and Medwick would be my choice.

Is there a better defensive CF that you can get? I.e. one with a 1 rating?
