You can join a public league or a private one. You will find people looking to start different "themes" for leagues and these are usually private. You are playing against real managers, but the computer (HAL) runs the games each night from about 12:15 EST to 1:15 EST based on how you have your team set up. You aren't playing over the computer like you can with the computer game version of SOM. You can't make in-game decisions like you would if you were playing on the computer or in person.
You draft a team from the different seasons available. If you want all of the greats, you would draft an ATG V team using players from 1889 to currently retired (or not playing anymore like Barry Bonds) ones. If you chose to play a specific year such as 2008, you draft players from any team you want.
The leagues run for about 8 weeks. There are 3 games played each day. You set your lineup, starting rotation, bullpen use, backup players in case of injury, etc. The leagues run continually all year round.
