70's manager with little experience looking for guidance

Postby jschrah » Sat Jan 02, 2010 1:52 pm

I am not that experienced with the 70's game, so I am looking for a few smart managers to take a peek at my team and point me in the right direction. I usually play 80's only, with my only 70's exception being the 70/80 tournament.

Looking forward to your advice,

I would drop Bair or Lizzy for a cheap position player. I think you have an extra RP you dont need. You could use some of the free cash to upgrade 2b. I would look for more of a stick since you are already giving away scoring at SS. Play a 3 if he can deliver some 'pop' in your park. Keep a close eye on CF. If you dont hit on Thomas or Murphy you have a big hole there. I think they will be your key players. If you hit on both, you will have a potent line up. If you whiff on both, it could be a long season.

As Panzer said, drop a righty reliever. I think you need to pick up another lefty reliever who is tough on lefty batters, as your starters are all right handers who will see lots of LH bats.

You have several good RH power bats, but only Big Mac from the other side. If you have the chance to drop either Murphy, Thomas, or Howard for a lefty who can hit. This will help your lineup vs. RHP. W/O such a move your lineup might struggle against righty starters who are 2R or higher.

What I see...

Too much money tied up in your bullpen for a Ful Co team. You already have Gossage as your hammer there is no need to overspend on anyone else. I would agree about getting another LRP who is tough on lefty batters. Also, I'm coming around and now starting to use 11 pitchers in hitters parks...your bullpen will get taxed often so you need more arms not more expensive ones

As for your lineup...there is no such thing as too many left handed power hitters on your team in the 70's game...I would swap someone for another lefty bat. I would also swap one of your power hitters for someone with a high OBP. Millan isn't enough at the top. You're looking at a lot of solo HRs and a lot of DPs

I would add a left handed starting pitcher and drop one of the righties. Gura, Norman and Caldwell are in the price range of the right handed starters you currently have on your roster.
