Raising Threshold for * Pitchers

Postby Play By The Rules » Fri Jan 01, 2010 12:16 pm

The * is BS. Should only be for pitchers IMO who exceed 300IP. NONE of the current starters in MLB are worthy, IMO, AND, starters almost NEVER pitch on three days rest anymore even in the big games.

Remember what Chuck Tanner did with Wilbur Wood?

This is an interesting subject, as the * system works well strategically, making an interesting game, but is not realistic. To make a change (eliminating current asterik ability to pitch with 3 days rest) that is truly realistic, and keeps the game interesting would include realistic pitcher injuries, and probably a class of pitcher that needed 5 days rest (Robinson Tejeda for next year for example).
That would create other strategic ripples, maybe larger pitching staffs which would leave less extra hitters, and the platoon (which I love) might become a thing of the past)
So maybe a change could be made, but I think it would need to be really well thought out. I would rather have Strat do nothing then make a change which makes a less interesting game.

You have to realize that there are limitations in the game attempting to simulate reality, and this is just one of them.

Do teams really play 162 games in a row without any days of rest?
Is the hitter vs. pitcher interaction really a 50/50 split?
Do ballparks really only have an effect on singles and homeruns?
Are star players ever really put in a platoon?

This list could get quite lengthy.

This is just a game, not a real-life game. Just accept that and have fun playing it. Like litangel mentioned, it may be nice to change a few aspects to more closely approximate the game conditions, but I'm fine with the way the game is now and would not be in favor of a sudden, radical, haphazard change.

I would be in favor of getting rid of the *Starter entirely. It adds to the strategy. One way to buttress this decision would be to add "off-days" to the schedule, so some pitchers to get skipped and aces get more starts.

In a face to face league he had a 10% rule... Pitchers can't pitch more than 10% over their innings and hitters cant appear more than 10% of their PA. No one seems to complain about Kuo pitching over 200 innings when was the last time a reliever did that?

I TOTALLY AGREE about the RP point you make, elpasopesos. So much so that I started a separate thread about it:
