Pete Rose, 1979 & 1980 years

Just noticed his 2 cards.

1979 he played in 163 games and 1980 he played in 162 games.

Why is there an injury listed for for him for these 2 years?

Because at that time Strat did not give out cards without an injury. It was not until the early 80's that Strat started to recognize Ironmen and reward them with a zero injury card. I seem to remember Garvey being the first to be recognized with no injury chance.

Not so fast, grasshopper!

According to the message board on March 7, 2009, a question arose about Rose's 163 games. Ms. Baseball and Papany answered the question;

Ms. Baseball spoke:

[quote:70b0a1983a]The answer is because on April 8, 1979, the Phils tied the Cardinals 2-2. His stats counted for that game, and he played every other game that year, including the make up double header later that year.

Official tie games count toward player and team statistics, but not toward the standings. [/quote:70b0a1983a]

Papany stated:

[quote:70b0a1983a]Also in 1979 Pete played in 82 games on the road and 81 at home. On July 11 the Padres beat the Phils 7-3. Pete did not Start due to an injury, but did PH in the 9th. papany [/quote:70b0a1983a]

Ms. Baseball followed-up:

[quote:70b0a1983a]Papany is correct. Rose came in as a pinch-hitter in the 9th. See 9th inning box score below:

Bottom of the 9th, Phillies Batting, Behind 3-7, Mark Lee facing 9-1-2
Pete Rose pinch hits for Warren Brusstar batting 9th
P Rose Walk
B McBride Groundout: 1B-SS/Forceout at 2B
L Bowa Groundout: SS-2B/Forceout at 2B
G Gross Walk; Bowa to 2B
M Schmidt Foul Flyball: C
0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors, 2 LOB. Padres 7, Phillies 3.

So, Rose did play the 163 games and did suffer an injury but was able to pinch hit in the 9th to maintain perfection. [/quote:70b0a1983a]

There was a reason for 1979 and there is probably is one for 1980.
