Does anyone remember the story about Jim Deshaies getting a vote because the writer thought he was what players should represent on and off the field? These things happen all the time...there were people who voted for D Larsen to be in the Hall because of his WS no-no even though he won about 45 games and was below .500 for his career[/quote:d2d5affda3]

And Chris Berman's nickname for Deshaies was . . . . ?[/quote:d2d5affda3]

I only remember...Eddie "eat drink and be" Murray and Bert "be home" Blyleven

Give me Bert and Cesar

Postby Larryrickenbacker » Wed Jan 20, 2010 11:48 pm

Howdy,

I'd put Cedeno ahead of Dawson. Perhaps Cedeno's excluded for two reasons: his home stadium supressed his offensive stats for years and two, he killed that girl. Dawson was a fan favorite-and for good reason, while Cedeno was trouble off the field. It's difficult to think of any other explainations..
I cannot understand why Rikalbert isn't in the HOF. Talk about a worthy picher!

Blyleven has better stats than some pitchers who are already in the HOF and should have been voted in a long time ago.

3701 K's (5th all-time)
287 W's (26th all-time while playing on many sub-.500 teams)
4970 IP's (13th all-time- the only expansion pitchers with more IP's are Phil Niekro, Nolan Ryan, Gaylord Perry, Don Sutton, and Steve Carlton.)
685 Games Started (11th all-time)
60 Shut-Outs (9th all-time)

Also:

Won 15 games by a 1-0 score - 3rd on the All-Time list - Only Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson won more 1-0 games.

Won a Major League game before his 20th birthday and won a Major League game after his 40th birthday. Only three pitchers have been able to accomplish this feat:

1. Herbert Pennock * (1912 - 1934)
2. Bert Blyleven (1970 - 1992)
3. Mike Morgan (1978 - 2002)

Pitched one No-Hitter - September 22, 1977, vs. California Angels while pitching for the Texas Rangers. The game was played in Anaheim, CA.

Pitched five one-hitters.

Member of the 1979 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates
Member of the 1987 World Champion Minnesota Twins
Post Season pitching:

* Posted a 5-1 record with a 2.47 ERA in eight games
* Six starts and two relief appearances
* 47 1/3 innings
* 36 strikeouts and eight walks
