Place your bets! Free agent Busts

Postby NEILKAHN » Sun Mar 19, 2006 11:18 pm

As I recall, the very first ever free agent signed was Andy Messersmith, by the Braves, and he stank for them for one season, and that was it. Guess that was the difference between playing in the Dodger black hole vs. "The Launching Pad" as it was known during the days of Hank. Incidentally, they were doing something to the baseballs while Hank was chasing the record. They had to be. It is the only logical explanation for the extraordinary homer totals by Darrel Evans, Dave Johnson, and Earl Williams during that period. Only Evans came close to the forty homer total in other seasons. Johnson's 43, when he never hit over 20 before or after is absolutely asinine, but nobody said boo because everybody loved Hank.

Are there any Orioles fans out there who remember Wayne Garland??????? What a great signing that was?? At least they didn't have to give up Finley, Harnisch and Schilling for him like they did Davis

I always thought the Glen Davis trade (along with Murray for Bell) was baseball finally paying the O's back for Cuellar for Blefry, and F. Robinson for Dick Simpson and Milt Pappas (an old 30) and other classics in the 66-71 era...
Come to think of it - it probably began with A's O's Balyor for Reggie in 76

Speaking of Davises. The Kansas City Royals actually had the highest payroll in baseball in 1990 thanks, in part, to the signings of Davises Storm and Mark; total busts.

And I live in Davis, California. Weird.

Come on Terp, you're dredging up some bad memories with all the Glen Davis talk. I still refuse to have him on my ATG teams. Although I am glad to have someone who knows what I'm talking about when I bring it up.
