Potential three-way tie

Potential three-way tie

Postby artie4121 » Fri Feb 19, 2010 8:51 am

Not being the sharpest knife in the drawer, I just want to make sure I am reading this right.

Tonight is the last series of my 2008 league and I am in first place by three games over team B who is in second place. I do NOT play them tonight.

Team B is playing Team C which is SIX games out.

--IF I lose three, and team C sweeps team B . . . there could be a [b:4581551251]three way tie[/b:4581551251] for first.

-- If I lost three and Team B sweeps Team C, there could be a [b:4581551251]TWO-way tie [/b:4581551251]for first between me and team B.

Here are the two rules:

[quote:4581551251]Tiebreakers for a 2-way tie are, in order:
- Head-to-head record
- Run differential
- Coin flip

Tiebreakers for a 3-way tie are, in order:
- Best record vs. teams within division
- Run differential
- Coin flip

[/quote:4581551251]

I checked, and I have a 15-9 head-to-head record over this fine second place team.

In the event of a three-way tie, I also have the best record in our division vs. teams within our division even if I lose all three games tonight.

The way I read it, I am IN the playoffs as division winner even if we wind up TIED three ways tonight.

This is vital to me because I have been plagued with injuries and would like to rest a few of my key players tonight in preparation for the playoffs. My doing so will have NO impact on any other races in the other divisions OR the battle for the wildcard in my own division.

Will someone smarter than me just confirm that I am reading this right and can have my injury-prone players "stand down" tonight?

Thanks for the guidance guys.

If you are 6 games up on Team C with 3 to play, there is no way that team can catch you.

The only way Team B can catch you is if they sweep Team C and you get swept. But if you have a 15-9 head-to-head record against them you will win the tie-break. You're golden.

Rest the injury potential guys and set up the rotation for the semis!

I will just affirm what PM770 said. If Team C is 6 games behind you and there are three games left they have been mathematically elimminated from winning the division, or tying for it.

Yeah. Remember, each win or loss counts as half a game, not a full game. Three losses by you would be 1.5 games, three wins by team C would be 1.5 games, for a total of 3 games . . . they would still be three games back. Hopefully you get a win and make the whole thing moot, anyway.
