70s/80s Players Championship- Round 4, Important

Postby chess2899 » Fri Feb 19, 2010 1:16 pm

Since managers are bugging me nonstop for round 4, we will get it started. It is the final 80s, $80 million, DH, using a different stadium fro previous rounds.

I will ask LMBombers to randomize the league. (I request that no one in the top 10 be placed in my league.)

We will start in the next couple weeks. This is the last league before the Final 12.

I expect to make the Final 12. I am at #47 today, so a couple titles will easily flip me into the finals.

[b:dce38ce1b2]Bonus prizes for Round 1 and 2: [/b:dce38ce1b2]Autographed Nolan Ryan balls went to pwootten and herge.
We'll know the winners of the Pete Rose (longest hitting streak( and Tony Gwynn (highest batting average based on 300 at bats) in about a week.

[b:dce38ce1b2]Bonus Prizes for Round 3 and 4:[/b:dce38ce1b2]

1. Autographed Steve Carlton for most pitcher wins in a season
2. Autographed Nolan Ryan for most pitcher strike-outs in a single game.
3. Autographed Juan Marichal Legends jersey for the pitcher who has the most wins whose name begins with the letter "M". (Messersmith, Morris Marichal, Matlock, Martinez etc.)

I'm glad the 80s League will get rolling soon. Thanks, Chess!

How does the Tony Gwynn thing work? Is this a prize for a manager, or a virtual honor for a virtual player. I'm asking because I have Fred Lynn on both my teams. He's hitting .330 in the 70s and .276 in the 80s, with a total of 264 games played (and 48 game--in the two leagues--left to play). He just might have a chance to win something if he gets hot down the stretch and can avoid injury....

I would say that Fred Lynn doesn't stand a chance in either league, OL. I would suggest picking up a "M" pitcher via trade or draft and go after the Marichal jersey. Marichal's blood soaked bat was not available according TSN. Roseboro has it for sale on ebay.

Actually Messersmith and Matlock are better choices for the "M" jersey. An interesting question would be: How long will Managers hold on to pitchers whose last names start with the letter "M"? A 13-21 record could win the prize but may sink your team in these leagues.

I actually have Marichal in my 70s team, but a Czar is not eligible for prizes except for the overall Championship which I am shooting for with my #47 ranking! :D

Ahhh, now I get it Chess....I just checked the rules on the Gwynn award and it says the following on the original Tournament thread:

[quote:e0d0908455]Tony Gywnn autographed ball to the manager with the player that has the highest batting average in either the 70s or 80s leagues. (based on 300 at bats) [/quote:e0d0908455]

However, above you say that the award is based on 300 [i:e0d0908455]games.[/i:e0d0908455]

This led to some puzzlement on my part and the speculative conclusion that the manager would need to have the player in both leagues (otherwise how would you get 300 games?) Given that it seemed unlikely that a manager would have the same player having a high BA in both leagues, I thought Lynn might have a chance.

The upshot, I guess, is that you might want to change the Gwynn explanation above to read 300 [i:e0d0908455]at bats[/i:e0d0908455].

Too bad this wasn't applicable for season 1. I currently have Marichal 69 on my 70s team who is sporting a 24-3 record.
I got lucky and have him again, but the chances of his doing it again are slim. =(

You are correct of course. Whay do expect from a Czar with only 2 hours of sleep in 3 days?

I had Eckersly with 18 strikeouts in a game and I doubt that will happen again! At least you have a shot with Marichal, but I would bet on Messersmith to win it.

I wanted to give out a Kevin McReynolds prize but no one at TSN recognized the name.

That's OK. Just buy a baseball from a local sporting goods store and write "KEVIN MCREYNOLDS" in crayon or something somewhere on the ball.
I can always pretend.

Remember that this is an 80's league even though this thread is in the 70's forum.
