"Closer" Designation

"Closer" Designation

I noticed that one of the modern year games (2001) has players searchable by position "closer." How is this defined? Is there a game mechanic attached to it? In the games I'm used to RPs are RPs.

Closer

Postby chasenally » Fri Feb 26, 2010 11:08 pm

It goes from C-0 to C-6. Closer for this many [b:333fa4f571]outs[/b:333fa4f571]. If your RP is rated C-0 then he comes into the game as a closer at F-0 (fatigued) right away and up to C-6 which can pitch 6 outs before he rates a F-0. All other fatigue ratings due apply. Gives up hits and walks in the amount of 3 or more in an inning and his rating will drop faster. Hope this helps and is the way I understand it. Mike

I kind of thought this was the other way around - i.e., a 6-closer can give up six *baserunners* before starting to fatigue. This represents an experienced closer, who is used to pressure and won't let a mistake or two shake his confidence. A 0-rated closer can't give up any baserunners or they will fatigue. Keep in mind that there are 0-rated closers and guys with no closer rating, so there is actually a difference. Someone without a closer rating would come into a save situation and be fatigued right away, so as to simulate that they aren't used to that pressure.

Can anyone positively confirm/deny either version?

I think Ragn is right. I went back and looked at one of my games and a C0 came in at F9 and after the first baserunner he dropped to F0. He did pick up a save though. I learned something new today. Thank you. Mike

I think both apply to this. C2 after 2 outs but can also be affected by baserunners given up. That's the way I understand it by reading the "How to read the strat card" at the very bottom of the page link. Wow I am more confused then ever  Mike

C-ratings are definitively about outs. A C-6 closer can pitch the 8th and be fully fresh if the 9th begins with a Strat-defined save situation.

I concur. As Marcus points out, the closer rating applies only during SOM-defined closer situations, the 9th inning with a lead of 1-3 runs. Therefore, an R1/C6 is really only an R1 until he finds himself in a closer situation. The closer endurance rating is also retro-active; if an R1/C6 enters in the 8th, pitches successfully and is left in for the 9th and it is a closer situation, he has 3 outs before being fatigued.
