Hi,
I have done some research on what has happened in the past as far as divisions are concerned. When I first started this league in 2002 I just used the first come first serve as far as divisions go. I used that for 2 years but it was a little slow on filling as teams would jockey for spots and I was always in first. So starting with the 2004 season through the 2007 season I used the record method for seeding the divisions. Last year I gave the top two seeds to the two teams that actually made the World Series and then seeded the rest of the teams according to their records so basically it was off records as well.
The following is the results of the research for all years:
For the 2 years 2002 & 2003 there would have been 6 divisions places to be had. The team with the best record going into the league finished in 1st place 2 times and 4th place 1 time. The team with the worst record going in finished in 1st place 2 times and 4th place 3 times. One of those years a team with 101 wins that was in the same division with another 101 win team finished in last place.
For the 4 years 2004-2007 going with seeding the teams going off of their records. So 12 total division places. The team with the best record finished in 1st place 5 times and in 4th place 4 times (during that span a team that won 100 games finished in 4th place 2 times). The team with the worst record going in finished in 1st place 2 times and in 4th place 1 time.
Last year basically going off records except placing the two World Series team in different divisions. The team with the best record didn't finish in 1st or 4th place and the team with the worst record in a division got a 1st and a 4th place finish.
When using the first come method of the 6 100 win teams only once did one of them win a division. A 100 win team of those 6 teams also finished in 4th place.
When using the record method (and including last year) 4 100 win teams not one of them finished 1st in a division. Of those 4 teams there was 3 3rd place finishes and one 4th place finish.
For each year and there were some ties for records. Key MP=missed playoffs, P=made playoffs
2002 (First come) the teams with the 1st(MP)-1st(MP)-3rd(MP)-4th(MP). Teams that made the playoffs 7th-8th-8th-10th.
2003 (First come) the teams with the 1st(P)-1st(MP)-3rd(MP)-4th(P). Teams that made the playoffs 1st-4th-5th-11th.
2004 (Record seeding) the teams with 1st(MP)-2nd(MP)-3rd(P)-4th(MP). Teams that made the playoffs 3rd-5th-6th-8th.
2005 (Record seeding) the teams with 1st(MP)-2nd(MP)-3rd(P)-4th(MP)-5th(MP) 3rd-5th was a tie. Teams that made the playoffs 3rd-6th-9th-12th.
2006 (Record seeding) the teams with 1st-(MP)-1st(P)-3rd(P)-4th(MP). Teams that made the playoffs 1st-5th-3rd-12th.
2007 (Record seeding) the teams with 1st(P)-1st(MP)-2nd(P)-2nd(MP). Teams that made the playoffs 1st-2nd-5th-6th.
2008 (Record seeing splitting the two World Series teams) the teams with 1st(MP)-2nd(MP)-2nd(MP)-4th(P). The teams that made the playoffs 4th-6th-a tie for 7th, 8th, & 9th place I guess the 7th(P)-11th(P).
And finally times teams going into the league made the playoffs:
First come 0 times.
Record Seeding 0 times.
So after all that research it proves that the teams with the best record have no better shot at making the playoffs and don't need to be grouped as 1-4, 5-8, & 9-12. We will stay with what I posted when asked about the divisions:
1-12
4-9
2-11
5-8
3-10
6-7
