Reelin' in the Years League

Postby padrenurgle1 » Thu Mar 18, 2010 12:44 pm

I'm fascinated to watch the progression, so far no surprises in the top picks, all franchise players for the decade. Kevin, the way a keeper league works is you choose which players to keep at the end of the 2001 season. Drafting Ichiro them now gives you the option of keeping him for 1 season, 9 seasons, or anywhere in between.

It will be interesting to see when the first wave of speculative picks come in (guys that weren't factors in 2001 but will later become big deals).

I'm from the Bay Area, I watched Bonds in person all through those years. Big Head, Big Arse...ginormous presence. That salary is freakish...and as scary as his 2001 card is (73 homers in the best pitcher's park in baseball)...I think 2002 is even better! My favorite Bonds moments were actually not even homers, they were intentional walks. Opposing managers and pitchers would pee all over themselves on a daily basis during those years, trying to figure out what to do. They would start micromanaging three batters prior to Bonds because they were so worried. Here are the moments:

1. Bruce Bochy, managing the Padres at the time, intentionally walked Bonds in the ninth inning of a 1 run game. Not unusual. What was unusual (maybe unprecedented) was...he was the first batter of the inning. Never saw that before or since. The Padres won.

2. Bobby Cox just hated Bonds, you could tell. He was always wobbling around, cursing to himself after Bonds took Maddux or Glavine deep. So mad. One game, Bonds came up in a close game, late, with the bases loaded. Cox had already made like 3 trips to the mound and several pitching changes that inning. He took off his cap, walked out onto the dirt and yelled out to the pitcher, who looked at him, flabbergasted. He yelled again and waved his hat around like a fly swatter. They intentionally walked him, with the bases loaded.

The first round always seems to take a while, until everyone gets on board, doesn't it? Oh well, halfway until the clock turns on...

URGH.

Sorry, I need a rule question first. If you have someone on your roster who plays so little in a future year that there is no card, but later comes back to play full time, do you retain the rights and have them at 0 salary for that one season? Or do you lose the guy, or pay some other kind of salary?

Hey Padre, no problem. The steps to a proper response are:

1. You draft a guy now, who has a card in the current set

2. The player has no card in the 2002 set, but will be back in '03

3. You choose to keep the player as one of the 20 remaining on your full roster, prior to the 2002 draft

4. After that draft, you then have 29 carded players in '02 plus this ghost -- you select 25 of the 29 for your active roster, as usual (the ghost has no impact on that)

5. You choose to keep the player as one of the 20 remaining on your full roster, prior to the 2003 draft

6. You play him again in 2003, as part of your 25-man active roster for that year

In other words, as long as you have drafted a player in a carded year, then you can keep him forever -- he DOES still count against your full roster limit of 30, however.

Clear as mud, right? :~)

Hey Padre, our messages probably crossed in the email -- I hope my response answered your query.

As to tracking the salaries, that's worthwhile, I guess, but remember that the game engine cap of $80 mil only applies to your active roster.

For example, you can have 25 players worth $80 mil on your active roster for 2001 PLUS 5 other guys (for your total of 30) worth whatever...
