OVERPRICED PLAYERS

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

I think the 70's pricing is pretty good (the 80's has too overpriced starters and underpriced cheap relievers) but there are some definite misses in the 70's game as well.

Morgan is not overpriced IMO. He's by far the best 2B in the 70's (and one of the best hitters overall), he is excellent defensively, has great OBP, power and speed. I've had him several times and unless you get his one bad season he's worth it.

Grich: Only one great season, so he should be around 6-6.5.
Otis: Great defensively, but too left leaning for that price. He should be around 6 mil.
Rettenmund: Should be around 4.5
Mayberry: Not nearly as good as similarly priced 1B.
N. Colbert: Same as Mayberry.
Rudi: I've never seen anyone use him.
Briggs: Bad defense and a pure platoon type. How is he more than Blomberg?
Jorgensen: Never seen him used.
Blair: Great defense, but too left-leaning for that price.
R. White: No defense, and not enough power for that price.

Plus you have a ton of good defense/no offense players in the 3.5-4.5 million range like F. White, McMullen, Repoz, Bradford, Duncan, Hegan, Belanger, etc. that would probably be more usable if they were under 3 million.

There are a few underpriced guys as well but I won't reveal them :D

Giving Rudi a try in LF

Postby Larryrickenbacker » Thu Mar 18, 2010 7:50 pm

Howdy,

With so much Lefty SP in my division, I've decided to give Joe Rudi a shot in left. Finley called him "The Modesto miracle". Perhaps he played "A" ball in Modesto, but he's supposed to be from Baker, Oregon.
Anyway, after all the laughter dies down, I'll let ya'll know how JR does this season; he's off to a blazing start, fwiw.

Larry
PS: Does [i:15d3d3d1ce]anyone[/i:15d3d3d1ce] draft Grich?

In defense of Grich

Postby voovits » Thu Mar 18, 2010 9:06 pm

I used to never use Grich, but I have taken a real liking to him.
He may be expensive, but he has a few things going for him.
- He has top of the line defense at a key position.
- He can run and steal OK
- He has exceptional on base numbers due to the high walks.
Those bottom 2 points make him for an exceptional 1 or 2 hitter in the order. If you happen to hit his 79 season, then he makes for a good 3-5 hitter.
The big thing about Grich is that I consider him a 5 season keeper. No matter what, I know I'm not going to drop him.
Yes he makes a lot of money, but you could easily end up spending that much money on penalties going through scores of other guys who simply wont cut it.
I don't go after Grich all the time, but when I do I consider him worth the price.

Rudi is interesting and seems to produce. The issue is you PAY for defense in the 70's . A 1 is a MILLION dollars for than a 2 with the same offense in general. Those millions add up.

Actuals

BA OBA SLG AB
.274 .314 .469 .783 36,274

Vs LHP
.287 .326 .503 .829 12,886

Vs RHP
.266 .308 .450 .758 23,388

Bill Russell at $3.19 million.

Never used him and, apparently, no one else has either.

a lot of chatter here about batters, not much about pitchers. The overpriced SPs:

Tommy John is #1
Jerry Reuss
Tom Seaver - should be $8.3

as an opening salvo

I can't see spending all that money for Matlack either, as every lefty starter I ever had got his a$$ handed to him, including Matlack.

No...and I'm glad you mentioned it because I have had equally bad performance out of Sal Bando and Gene Tenace...lots of walks and strikeouts and an occasional homerun. Not worth the high salary in an 80M league.
